Since Hap is ordering a 589nm may be he could let Sta play with his toy for several days?

Cni's laser that doesn't pass quality control process usually get pass onto third party re-seller... at least that what one of their sale engineer told me...

and Sta get to measure the pgl-iii-c dimension as well!!

2 birds with one stone.

Hahaa yeah. What sucks with ordering directly from CNI is the wait time for them to build the laser and have it pass quality control etc... to make sure it works fine which is ok. It's a long 2-3 weeks though

Sta will be getting his new 637 Spartan soon so he should be happy

Default Re: WTB: 589nm or 593.5nm pointer

Not a bad idea Tom. However, I will probably end up ordering a 593.5nm 5mW from CNI through DL.
Adam quoted me the following prices:
593.5nm 1mW $300
473nm 5mW $270
561nm 5mW $650

Still waiting on the price for 593.5nm 5mW.

But if the "defective" units are passed on, that would certainly explain why my 589 behaves like it does. As it stands I believe it's probably doing 583.8/589 as its main 2 wavelengths.

pgl-iii-c 593.5nm/5mW should not cost more than $500.

I used to have both pgl-iii-c 589nm/100mW(150mW-170mW Peak) and PGL-III-M(PGL-H module in a Spartan host custom build by myself) 593.5nm/20mW(30mW-40mW).

directly from CNI for $700.

Now CNI wanted $900 for those....Ouch!!
Dealing directly with CNI can be a roller coaster ride sometime.
their prices varies between sales rep, time of the day,etc...

the 561nm is over priced!! i got a 25mW(overspec) for $800...(directly from cni as well).

*if you purchase yours around 4 months ago then i'm sure your's is some of the defective unit that got pass on to third party.

Yep - mine was purchased in May, almost exactly 4 months ago. It's surely the best defective laser I've ever owned, haha. But I still have no idea what the real wavelength is.

Bump, I still need one of these.

I was quoted a price of $300 for a 1mW 593.5nm GLP from CNI through DL. This isn't ideal, but I may have to go through with it if nobody makes me an offer. I would really love to buy a 593.5nm pointer from someone here, even for more than it was purchased for.

That's not too bad of a price, especially since that GLP may very well end up being overspec.... by a lot, it's been seen before! Kinda neat DL is allowing us to go through them to order from CNI

Best of luck Sta

I was actually warned that they might be underspec. Do you think a "<1mW" unit might actually end up being overspec?
Edit: My other option is to purchase a "2-5mW" 593.5 from laserfanatics for $439. Which one should be better?

Edit 2: I'm the company guy! I should know that! But give me your recommendation anyways.

Edit 2: I'm the company guy! I should know that! But give me your recommendation anyways.
Hello Sta,

Well CNI only sells their 593.5 GLP's as rated "0.6mW-2mW" and we've seen some being pretty overspec. However, it isn't a guarantee you'll get a unit that performs over 1mW. laserfanatics sells their units as 2mW-5mW so that may very well be a safer bet so you get a true 1mW+ unit.

If it were me, I would buy the 1mW unit for $300 as CNI's GLP pens have more then often come in way above that power output

Just make your own spectrometer, in fact if you buy this pack of 25 you can make 25 spectrometers for $13.24.

In fact I already did this and measured the wavelength of my lasers to the 0.1nm. All you need is this equation.

If you want I'll make a post tomorrow showing how I did this in the measurements category

Thanks Sean, I will buy those. Pretty sure I understand the formula but could you explain it to me just to make sure?

And I'll probably be buying the CNI pointer anyways.

Yeah sure I'll just make a thread about it tomorrow explaining it.
Hopefully Hap will make it a sticky in teh measurements section tomorrow because I think its a great way to validate the wavelength of your laser for under $1

The best spectral resolution you can reasonably get DIY would be ~1nm. Maybe a little better, but not by very much without long distances to measure, a very stable setup and precise tools.

Using a 500line/mm grating, and measuring to a wall ~3m away, each mm of movement along the wall equals about 1nm (just slightly less) IIRC. Even with accurate measurements, there still is the tolerance of the diffraction grating, especially if it is a cheep one.
Keep in mind that a measurement at 1nm precision is already at around +/- 0.2%.

Yeah I calculated the tolerances with this 1000 lines/mm grating and I took my measurement 200 feet away with a measurement down to the 1/64th of an inch which gave me an approximate ~0.1nm resolution. I did do this however assuming that the error of the diffraction grating was zero, but for our purposes (not in an analytical laboratory) it is fine to report it to the 0.1nm so long as you measure it very far away. If you're in your garage though and are only 20 feet away then yes you are only going to be within 1nm, but good points

Sorry for getting a little offtopic, but did you check the accuracy by measuring a 532nm to double check?
