could someone explain why I should not just buy OPHIR head for ~190$ from e-bay and hook it up to 2 or 4 9V batteries as explained in one of the earlier threads? Provide good heat-sinking and use it with voltmeter?

Why would I want to buy premade LPM instead (such as the one offered here)?

This is a genuine question, pardon me if it sounds silly. I am interested in OP's LPM's, just figuring out my options.

That isn't a bad option,
but an ophir setup like that isn't very portable.
9V batteries are a pain IMO.
and most cheap voltmeters are not acurate down to the mV.

And ophir heads from ophir cost $700.
even in bulk they cost 250ea
the ones on ebay are unknown.
