Default Re: Prototype Analog 3.5W+ LPM's for sale

Any particular reason you chose to embed an 18650 instead of a LiPo? I'd be worried about the LPM getting bumped and the battery coming loose/shorting out, whereas you could get a nice LiPo to fit in that spot you have there.

I'd also be careful with how the wires are attached to the back of the heatsink, and maybe use thinner wire instead of speaker wire. You're talking milliwatts of power from that thing. I see the wire getting flexed a bit too much and breaking off at the hot glue.

Looks like you have a good product in the works. The hot glue wouldn't bother me in the least. Remember folks, he didn't claim this was a production run, merely prototype.

If it's close to accurate, these will sell well.

Default Re: Prototype Analog 3.5W+ LPM's for sale

Lipo's require aditional protection circuitry. Didn't want to deal with it.
The battery is fairly secure, and even if it did come loose there isnt anything for it to short out with, and if there was a short, I would rather it be an 18650 vs a lipo.

The wires are actually fairly flexable, they are from a AC/DC adapter.

@jcranmer
Thanks

Uhhh, you do still have protection circuitry on the 18650 right? How are you charging it?
In terms of charging and discharging, they are identical. The only difference is a 18650 becomes a pipe bomb and a LiPo becomes a flamethrower.

My 18650's have a built in protection pcb + an external charging regulator.

Also from expierence, Lipos are more dangerous.

Try to find a video of an exploding 18650,
now try to find a video of an exploding lipo...

"Warning - Do not impale lpm with drill"

But as far as i know, 18650's dont catastrophically fail due to over-chargering ect.
Lipo's clearly do.

I've had a Sanyo blow up on me, in the charger... But I've also had lipos blow up charging RC helicopters... The lipo made a nicer fire but the 18650 smelled like shit...

Once I see some screws to hold the PCB's, zip ties holding the cables together, and a better detachable cable for the sensor then it could be considered a viable LPM for 200$.

This is what the insides of an LPM are supposed to look like http://i.imgur.com/xVi47.jpg

@justinjja
You've got what looks like the start of a good LPM here. Don't take this the wrong way I don't want to bash you, just trying to offer advice. I wouldn't pay more than 100$ for something like this. If you want to compete with LaserBee you're going to have to produce better quality LPM's. It wouldn't be much work to clean up the insides and make it look pretty, just a few screws and some zip-ties, and a bit of shrink wrap. Presentation counts for a lot. If this insides look like $h*% then people are going to think you're selling a low quality product.
i remember that some laserbee lpm had no housing. you only got th board the lcd mounted on it... It was still considered professional but had nothing to protect it from a possible fall. In some devices they make the housing look "professional" but the guts may be totally simple and unprofessional. Maybe if this lpm was $150 i would buy it.

Yeah it was like that just shorter, and more like a pipe bomb instead of a huge spread out fire

But don't worry I doubt anyone will need to drill their LPM's lol

@silvershot I agree, if these were 150$ I would have taken it right away, but I don't think 200$ is overpricing it either.

Thanks for the responses,
good to know they should sell fairly easily for a bit less.

Also if there are any vets out there with the equiptment to test these,
I would be happy to pay shipping both ways.
Interested in wavelenght linearity, power linearity and max accurate reading.
PM me.

Did you buy your Alpha New...
Maybe the previous owner added the hot glue...
Or maybe it was a repair job..

I've had a few Alphas in the shop. Two of the first ones and
one of the last ones that were sold and none of them had
Hot Glue in them..

You can try to justify the use of Hot Glue as a Mounting technique
but it is not a sound professional way to do it...

Hot Glue is a PITA when you need to change or repair a part...

I can see using hot glue for one prototype for yourself but not
for multiple items for sale at such a relatively high price..

@ Silvershot...

The functioning OEM LaserBee LPMs we sold were specifically sold
so that one could build them easily into their own enclosures and
save some money doing it.
Even our OEM (no Enclusure) PCBs have rubber feet under them to
protect the Electronic Solder connections under the PCB.

BTW.. housings on sensitive electronic test equipment will not do
much to protect that instrument from a fall...
