Wasn't there another recent case here on the forums about someone playing the same trick? I agree also that if it truly WERE official business, there would be no "trick" tactics, just the facts (along with, of course, personal identification...)

Take a deep breath, relax - you're clobbering the price points most builders need to make to keep things profitable, so it's probably the "not-so-friendly-competition" just trying to ring your bell.

heh i can't remember if your package to me was labeled as john lawson or not  ::)

i'll probably keep things to just here on the forum...instead of making them readily available to the general public....

this is a good incentive to push me to make the lasers legal......although i lack the electrical skills to make a delayed switch......thats about the only thing holding me back......if only i knew how to use a 555 timer....and if that could even be used........

the rest would all be in the design of the host....

oh I'VE NO DOUBT THAT IT'S LEGIT. just like any law enforcer, they have to "bust" you before they can prosecute.

they do , and soft start up, but I don't know if it meets FDA requirements or not.

The last scammer used the same FDA contact which makes me think that the same person is doing it again. You definitely can purchase a card that allows you to display whatever telephone number that you want on caller ID when you call someone. There are many different ones; but one of them is called "CamoCard".  If this is yet another scam, we need to identify who the perpetrator is. It is a federal crime to impersonate a member of the FDA and this would be the second time that he has impersonated Dan. My strong guess is that this is a competitor who does not invite competition in the hobby market. The unfortunate part is he's likely among us in LPF. Bill

Mohrenberg, could you post the specific IP address of your site's visitor?

It'd be useful for webmasters to be able to blacklist the whole IP range so FDA agents could never visit the site.

I think for it to be FDA-permitted, it has to have an audible or visual warning as the soft-start happens, and it has to be a certain duration. ("An audible tone or bell and/or visual warning (such as a flashing light) is recommended as", "Such warning devices are to be activated upon system start-up and are to") Even then, it is not legal for you to sell them, unless you actually register yourself with the FDA. I might be able to help you with a 555 circuit, give me a few hours and I could put together a prototype. You can look up "555 monostable" examples, but this adds complication and cost....

For FDA certification you need or should have AT LEAST:
Aperture Cap
Visible or audible warning
Delayed start-up
Labels
Safety Key?

You're very unlucky to get that kind of attention, I have very little doubt that if the hostname and phone number match, it is unlikely to be a fake. Spoofing both of those constitutes some considerable IT knowledge, but is possible for people with access to considerable resources (A large company prepared to use underhand techniques to increase or rescue sales)

Yeah, that's what you need. BUT you don't need all of them to get an accession number, I'm sure the alpha series ( or is it the RPL ? ) has an accession number and doesn't have all 5, also the aperture cap can be replaced with a shutter.
