C6 Aurora Host + Kit Feeler

Hey everyone. I recently finished one of my builds (minus the diode of course, but simulated it and it works nicely) and I figured that, since I haven't seen an Aurora kit around here, and it is a popular host, that I may as well stick out a feeler for a kit.

So the kit would come with a couple of things:
- Empty host
- Driver pill (cut down to be level with rest of pill)
- Driver (hot option: set to specified current)*
- Copper heatsink
- 2x UltraFire 16340 batteries (hot option)*

So is some info about it.

The heatsink:
Polished and custom made, latheless, out of pure copper. Comes with a set-screw and is fit to hold the top half of the Aixiz module. Length-wise, it will fit perfectly into the head of the Aurora host. Every one will be different due to the fact that I don't have a lathe... but they are guaranteed to fit and heatsink your diode well!

*HOT OPTION:

So the idea behind the hot option is a very cheap driver that I found which is a buck driver that is supposed to output 1A. However, with a bit of customization, I have managed to essentially make it adjustable by just changing out some resistors. Anyway, the hot option would come with one of these drivers, superglued into the driver pill, customized to your current needs (haha, get it?).

Further, it comes with a pair of UltraFire 16340s, which are the only batteries which have been tested to output the right current for my customization.

If this is chosen, however, red diodes cannot be used due to their case-negative nature.

Anyway, so prices:
"Cold" option: $25
"Hot" option: $40

Completed thing! Just insert diode and power up, baby!

So what do you guys think? Think it has potential? I'd really like this host and this heatsink (especially 'cause I made it!) and I feel that this forum needs a kit for DIYers all in one bundle.

What am I missing here - isn't this nearly identical to the Survival Lasers kit?

Or is this a different host?

Huh. I had never seen that before. Looks like a similar host....

Maybe mine is a bit cheaper? On Survival Lasers, the copper *heatsink* is like 26$, where as that's the cost for the whole thing for mine =p

All I know, regarding the host, is that this one comes directly from Cree (well, indirectly, but it *is* a C6 Cree Aurora host - I removed the Cree emitter myself :p ).

If I can make a huge suggestion - find a different host.

I say that for your benefit ;)

There are a ton of these kits, and hosts, and heatsinks floating around here. There have been at least 3 sales threads for copper C6 Aurora heatsinks in the last month, including 1 group buy. Survival Laser has had their stuff out for a while, Yobresal used to make and sell them, and I would venture to guys that half the owners of 445s on this board, have at some point, owned at C6 Aurora 445.

I think they're a cool host, but I think they're also the most done-to-death host here, and I'm not sure a low price is going to revive interest in them.

There are so many cool hosts that haven't been "tapped" the way the Aurora has. Why not make a kit out of the WF501B bodies? They're also easy to source, and haven't been done yet in any widespread way.

Or just find a cool niche. Something like this:
$20.40 - UltraFire WF504B XM-LT6 5-Mode 510-Lumen White LED Flashlight with Strap - Silver (1 x 18650) - 18650 Cree Flashlights

Actually, It looks just like Jayrob's kit.....since he did it WAY before survival lasers even existed.

Yeah, lots of people have sold these and still do.

Hmm.

The idea behind this kit was essentially for newbies like me who want something cheap and quality, but can't really make their own heatsink (until a genius taught me how to make a makeshift lathe ;) ).

That said, I still have a pico-ton of copper rod stock for this host, so maybe if I can find a host of equivalent head size I would be in business. Nonetheless, I just plan on buying random hosts (once I get more money, that is) and building lasers out of them. The only reason I put this up as a host/kit deal is because it's the first one that I have been able to successfully reproduce that isn't already someone else's kit ;)

That said, I still think this may have potential. Think about it: for $40 for a hot-option set up, this could easily churn out a ~$95-100 1-1.3W 445nm laser (assuming $45-50 for the diode, then the Aixiz module and lens).

Anyway, I will keep this up to get more feedback, but I will take what you said into consideration.

Bwahaha! Mine is even cheaper than Jayrob's! Probably because I am not really interested in profiting as much as I am in seeing my name around here in tutorials and reviews.

Hey Wolfman,

The SurvivalLasers kit is only like $50 - I vote you do a different design, just because it will avoid some tension around here. There's sort of an unspoken (actually, quite outspoken) rule around here against duplication. I semi-ran into some stress on this point last week. Anyway, point being, this design really has been done to death, and I think there are so many other options out there - that it's not worth reinventing the wheel.

You've got a great opportunity here to do something that would be your own unique "niche" :)

How about any of these hosts?

Sounds like a plan. I will have to order some of those when I get the money so I can check out the dimensions, build quality, etc.
