Hi, I want to buy a ruby laser head (as the title says). I want it good and fully functional, so that I will not have to buy anything else to make it work (ruby rod, flash lamp, mirrors, pulse forming network, etc.). I am offering $300 for it. If you are interested, send me a PM. :yh:

It is illegal to export a Ruby laser like the one you are asking about. The same thing applies to a SSY1, and any other military hardware.

Nope, there is nothing illegal about a ruby laser, the rule only refers to ex military equipment, and there are other ruby heads besides the rangefinder from the tank.
And, there maybe ruby heads outside US for sale.

Back to the topic, 300$ for what you ask maybe a bit too little. There is a eBay seller from Israel that might have ruby rods or possible heads, probably not everything you ask but it's a good start.

eBay My World - guyovad

Try to send him a message.
For starters I would settle for a ruby rod and a pair of dielectric mirrors. Everything else can be made reasonably easy.

thanks for the link, I know $300 is not very much for such a laser, but I am sure I can pay more, if it is not enough for someone :)

He could always ask the seller...that exclusion list is a bit arbitrary...
Or some kind soul from a non excluded country could get it for him.

I found these rods as soon as they appeared, before you put the links here. But I don't know how to make a ruby laser, that's why I was asking for a complete laser head. Even if I managed to make a laser head, I know nothing about pulse forming networks.

That large rod looks really good, but buying also mirrors, flash lamp, PFN and laser cavity would cost too much and with shipping more than $20 for every item, it is just impossible.

If a complete laser head with PFN and worldwide shipping appears somewhere, then I will gladly buy it.

Edit - spelling

Forget about all that PFN nonsense, the values are far from critical. I played with that for a long time and measured things with a oscilloscope, and I can tell you it's nothing too exotic. And the flash lamp pulse length for ruby is far less critical then for nd:yag.

There was also another guy here on the forum that made a working ruby laser, he got just the ruby crystal, the rest was just put together by him:
YouTube - Homebuilt Ruby Laser

If I was having a go at a ruby laser I would get the larger rod and then beg for mirrors...
The small rod will more or less just need the flash lamp and PSU and it's ready to go.....but it's small :)

It is very possible that my brother will travel to the USA next week. Is there any way to get some SSY-1 (or some other) head to the Slovakia without a risk?

EDIT: My brother will not go anywhere :( So I am still searching for a worldwide shipping.

Here is a link to the Israeli Ministry of Defense selling the Hughes Ruby Laser Range Finder from an M60 MBT. They might be able to ship anywhere in Europe. The laser is about halfway down the page. It probably has the PFN and the opto-mechanical q-switch with it.

Hi guys, it seems like I am getting Nd:YAG head from some guy from Germany. He sent me the photo, it looks like SSY head, but he said it is german laser and it may have a power of 3MW. I am also getting goggles, a KTP crystal and everything I will need to make it work from him. It all will cost 370 Euro including shipping. What do you think about it?
