Opening up the back of the lens gives you more mW. However, you get a "messier" dot. The emission from a PHR is very elongated. The aperture at the rear of the AixiZ lens "cuts off" the edges of the beam. This results in a "rounder" dot, but less output. If "MOAR POWAH" isn't your goal, the prettier dot is better looking. In reality, you cannot "see" the difference in output. It is measurable, but not visible. However, you CAN see the difference in the "look" of the dot.

Peace,

Re: bluray modules 40.00 shipped USA only sorry

(Sorry to hijack the thread for a second here, guys...)

Hey Dave, if I were using a BR focused to infinity for best beam (as in with a laser display) then cutting the back out would be a good idea, as it would increase the visibility due to more mW output (if only marginally) ?

Thanks!

MARGINALLY is the key here.  You will NOT "see" the increase in power, but you WILL SEE the shape of the dot.

Especially with violet lasers, distance is not really an issue.  The beam scatters so much in the air that it doesn't matter if you get 8 more mW out of it or not.  It won't look any different.

You have to keep the difference between "science" and "application" in mind.  Some of us doing "science" (no matter how rudimentary) beat ourselves around to squeeze 8mW more out of a diode.  However, in actual use, that same 8mW is useless.  Unless you measure the output before and after with an LPM, you wouldn't know you've increased the output.  If you are keeping the PHR <120mW, don't bother.  Enjoy the rounder dot that the aperture gives you.  If you are pushing your diode >120mW give it every advantage you can, AND be ready to replace it before the year is out anyway. ;)

Peace,
dave

Re: bluray modules 40.00 shipped USA only sorry

well it will definately shorten the lifespan -speaking of which my personal bluray got the button smashed again it was red hot in my pocket when i finally noticed
it was on i popped button back out recharged batts its fine but it was so hot the dot was a 1/2 inch instead of 1/8 until it cooled back down (its pre focussed)
but its been running at 130 ma about 120 mw for almost 8 months now or was that 10 :-? :-/
i would say 70 mw is the safe setting  but hey your diode only lives once
