Default Re: Blu-ray compact laser pointer for sale

I bought the previous one so I'll comment, though I haven't used it much for lack of goggles.

The unit is as it appears in the picture: very clean, very well done. The cap over the optics in front is glow-in-the-dark.

skram0's packaging was excellent and delivery was remarkable (shipping was included in the price): payment was made at 1:27am on 12/25; it was at my front door at 1:26pm on 12/28. Over the holidays, with Christmas in there.

Operation is simple; you can use either the button to turn it on momentarily or use the switch to turn it on and leave it on. The switch does *not* enable the button: it has two different ways to turn it on. The cap on the end is the safety.

We're not sure of the output power. I'm no good at estimating optical power, certainly not at this wavelength. Definitely enough to make things fluoresce and glow!. The beam doesn't appear to be visible but the spot is - but keep in mind that the eye sees 405nm poorly and often the fluorescence is much brighter than the spot. Against my white wall the spot is just a violet dot I can't quite focus on, but on my socks the spot is a very bright blue.

This does not appear as bright as a 5 mW 635nm: yours eyes don't handle 405nm that well. That's OK because it's really the fluorescence of other things that makes this fun. This is not a Death Ray but rather a relatively "safe" 405nm for making things glow (as much as any 405nm can ever be called "safe&quot and for showing off a new color to your friends who still think green is special. 8-)

In summary: a well made, well packaged 405nm violet, with fast delivery. I'm quite pleased and would buy from skram0 again.

That does seem to be a very well made pointer

Still I don't know why you would be needing goggles at that output jrv...

It's not the output level but the wavelength that worries me - on the edge of UV, not to mention the fluorescence which seems like a warning sign of something. I don't have a spare pair of eyeballs.

PS. I forgot to mention that skram0 included a piece of glow-in-the-dark material. The laser was ready to go right out of the box, battery installed and target trinket included!

Thank you for your kind words. Building these things has been a great experience and a great outlet to express some creativity that builds up inside over time. I love building things and fixing things. (i guess that's why I enjoy working in a computer repair shop. )

How many mw is the actual output of this laser? On ebay its 5mw, but i know their rules. so is it 5mw or more?

Since I don't own an optical power meter, I can't be sure of the output power. But I guess it's around 5mW or so, maybe between 5-8. I think some people have pushed'm to 15 if I'm not mistaken, but I'd rather go for diode life rather than diode brightness. It's regulated @ 38ma of current. So if anyone's created a power output chart or have measured these at this current, then that's most likely what it's running at. Anyone done power output tests?

If anyone's interested in seeing what I might happen to be selling at any given time, you can check this link:

On mine you can just see the beam in the dark if you long down the beam from *behind* the laser (no I will not try from in front). Unfortunately I'm not sure how to interpret this as violet 405nm is poorly handled by the eyes.

It's UV (ultraviolet), so yes its very hard to focus on wit your eyes. Shining it at a peice of paper aids i focusing though

It's amazing how the violet light really shows how "dirty" your air is. Every dust particle floating in the air seems to fluoresce when you look down the barrel. I can see the beam too even while looking at the side, a couple feet away of course. That's how I gotta calibrate it so the beam ain't shootin in all directions.

One interesting test, and kinda nasty if you think about it, is shine the laser near a couch or chair and give it a good whack and check out how the beam shines like there's smoke in the air. :-? Werks fer the 100mW reds too.

I think it is a "crime of opportunity"....They only remove the listings they see ! I have seen several that OBVIOUSLY were meant to advertise the more hazardous nature of lasers, and they were not removed....I guess I will never understand WHY Ebay acts that way Especially (old news flash coming up !!!) when the FIRST ITEM EVER sold on Ebay was a busted laser pointer !!! THAT floors me ! I think that actually made it into Trivial Pursuit or something ! Okay, sorry for ranting...are you going to be selling more Blu-ray lasers soon ? If I can get it for a ridiculously low price (no offense, of course !!!) I would jump at it ! Although - if you DO sell them, in all honesty, I sincerely wish you the best of luck, and hope that I am not the winner, since I know my budget ! LOL !!!

Not sure on a price for that. I guess maybe if it's 100mW or something it'd be around the price for a Blu-ray.

Speaking of removal of eBay items. Check this one out. This is the guy who's been selling them like forever. Seems like 2 a week.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=170184594928

Here's a quote, "The module is outputs just over 5mW CW at 405nm (Violet)" Over 5mW!?!?

"Power output: >5mW (typically 5.4-5.8mW Class IIIB" A portable Class IIIB Laser!? Come on now. That's got to be out of eBay's policy. Is it because he's not in the USA selling it? That laser is way crappy, large, and the module sticks out. This is the guy who's sold a couple a few months ago for 405$ buy it now and they seem to end around 200$ or more now. What's this guy's trick!? He sells over priced, over powered (eBay's rules), an inferior design, a crappy description, & hardly any pics (he just recently added that 3rd one where you can actually see the item) for mega bucks.

Here's one of his ended auctions: $211.00

What do you mean, "just add power"? Just add battery?

the blueray in an axiz type module, with a board inside it, that'll accept various range voltages, that would be nice, how much would you pay?
