Re: Presale (24h LEFT) : 80 BenBoost first come first served. 11.50$ + 2.50SH CDN

Let we wait for the results on the oscilloscope. We are jumping around like a chicken without a head. I put my dual Ben Boost driver build on hold until we know more about the drivers.
I wouldn't risk blowing up the H1600 diode.

Thanks for the warning Tj.

@Tom. Its fine. I just dont where that brick came from for that simple statement I made. I never said they were definitely the problem. I insinuated more testing needed to be done, and nothing more. No one is perfect, and no one can think of everything.

@Blord. I'd still wait, but it doesnt look like the 445s are effected. Those diodes are almost bullet proof. They truly changed the hobby. So much that we forgot how fragile the single modes were. It would also explain why its taken so long for an issue to pop up, if indeed they are the problem. Everyone is building more 445s over all other wavelengths.

This is true because 445's can take currents beyond there lasing capability. But if you have a dual ben boost setup at let's say 1.9A @ 3.6V, there could be a dud when it exceeds 2.1/2.2A @3.9V for a millisecond right?

Greetings,,

EDIT: ( I was talking about input voltage) and correct me if i am wrong :)

When the 445's are overdriven beyond the maximum they just dim. They don't die or go LED. That's why TJ said they are bullet-proof.
You can't do that with a 405nm or even red diodes. They will go LED and nothing you can reverse it.

True, but at a certain ammount of current they are going to die aswell correct?

Doubting myself now :p

That must be a voltage spike as high as the mount Everest. :D
I have read that M140/H1600 goes 2.4A without problems.

Ooh :p i didn't knew it was that high :) anyway why would wait putting your dual bb build together?

445 diodes can die from over current..... It has happened before....

I've had plenty of a-140s die on me at 1.8A because they couldn't handle it. And yes, they died, never came back to life.

Yeah, bullet proof was an exaggeration, but we all get the point.

RHD and Ben should have never released these without full testing.

"Released" is a strange way to say it, since neither of us ever sold any of these drivers. We "released" the design, in the sense that we made it open for everyone to critique, so perhaps the phrase fits. I suppose I would be more sympathetic to your comment about whether we should have released this or not, had it been some sort of closed-source product. But the reality is that this was a design that we put out there, openly/transparently/freely for members to hammer away at. The fact that this didn't really happen, kind of shocks me to be honest.

Neither Ben nor I are in a position to "fully" test anything. There are very few members of this community with the resources (financial or technological) to "fully" test a product/design/component etc. Maybe Jerry and a few others with semi-commercial enterprises can do that, but this is a driver that we put out there free for everyone to use, test, build, revise, and improve upon. It was never meant to be "ours", it was meant to be "everyone's".

Maybe we should have "released it" to only a small handful of members to pound on, instead of giving it to the forum as a whole. Maybe we should have "released" it to the vets section only. That would have been one approach to take. Though had we done it that way, there would have been a ton of members, new, old, novice, and vet alike, complaining about "elitism", "favoritism", and all sorts of crazy stuff like that.

So it feels very lose-lose. You try to do something positive, and people complain that it (maybe) wasn't as refined as it could have been (though the jury is still out on whether there's really a problem or not).

There were a whole number of neat little trinkets, circuits, and devices that I had intended to give to the forum as "open hardware" type items. But I don't think LPF has the maturity to handle an open-sourced hardware endeavor. I've said before that we should have seen 50 of these manufactured, tested, revisions made, and then another 50 made, tested, etc etc etc. This design should have been iterated beyond the 17 (?) revisions that Ben and I made before giving it to the forum. But with the exception of ADDING a feature or two, I don't think any actual usage or testing-derived feedback has made it back into the design, to this day. Many people here take take take, and very few give give give - and that's the poison pill for any project that is meant to be collaborative, open, and community guided.

It's been 480 hours. Maybe you should rename the thread.

Uh oh. This isn't going to turn out well. :spank:

I'll give it another week before I start to worry... If we don't get it I still got a driver I made anyway, I just wanted one of these to try them out :)

Wait, is there a problem brewing?

Is Cilegray missing in action?

Well he told me there were some private issues and that he'd ship out the next day.. He hasn't been on after that so i hope all goes well!

Greetings,,

EDIT: he told me multiple times that he would ship the next day but i wonder if they ever got shipped..
