HAHA how about the fact that I legally purchased about a half dozen rifles/shotguns before I ever had my first legal beer. "18 years old! sure! here is an M-4 carbine!, oh wait, put that beer down! your not responsible enough yet!" :thinking: anyway, glad lasers are legal (FOR NOW...)

Most lasers we own are illegal but there is no law prohibiting you from owning a 1kW laser as long as it has the correct safety features.


EDIT: we are kind of derailing here guys haha

Yes, i would have to say, if you are on these forums, and own a laser, you are breaking the law. over 5mW without the 5 FDA "approved" safety features on it, and the fda's approval of your product, and it's illegal.

Building and owning a laser without the FDA safety features is legal in the United States of America. Importing one without said safety features, or selling one without said safety features, however, is quite illegal, yes.

So seriously? why have I seen threads of people getting their 445 custom builds taken by the police?

Because using them in public without a variance and the safety features is illegal. Plus cops can kind of do whatever they want.

Public laser display (a.k.a. waving it around in public like an idiot, in this case) requires a variance.

It is legal to own. Operation is different.

Fixed.

The variance system centers around laser shows, and focuses on the safety of attendees. It's not unreasonable at all.

The next best solution after compliance is not being an idiot.
