8x Drive Mini "GB"....

Yes, if that REALLY happens, we COULD do that INSTEAD - turn the 8x "GB" into a 12x "GB"!


But i have a few concerns... No one ever built or tested a 12x yet!

My main concern is, that we already know a tiny little bit about 8x's..
But we have ABSOLUTELLY NO CLUE about 12x's whatsoever!!

I was hoping i could afford to murder a 12x out of my own pocket, if the 8x batch goes through!


The first one i get WILL (after plotting) BE MURDERED on my Cycler cct. (after a "week" of playing with it as a lazor :angel: with a timer in it to add lifetime to the Cycler data)...




But if the 12x's jump on us NOW.. Well, two things will happen:
1. 8x's drop in price = good for those who still want an 8x...
2. People from 8x list may change their mind, and wish for a $220-$250 12x instead..

If we convert this into a 12x GB, it doesn't influence the 8x MURDER EXPERIMENT too badly in any case... I have three 8x's here or on their way here AT LEAST! More to come FOR SURE (completelly custom builds), even if it wasn't for this "Mini 8x GB" here..


BUT! What would we set the 12x's to (current/power)? We need to do this the right way for once!

I am already negotiating a 12x purchase, and i will try to figure out the best current for it for longevity. Another fundraised may be necessary even... Or i'll just do it myself IF i can afford it...

I know everyone wants more power - so do i! But when we get a new diode, we never know ANYTHING about it, and 405nm's don't really tell you when to stop pushing.

So one 12x HAS to be murdered, and IF the 8x batch goes through, i'll gladly kill a 12x myself on my Cycler (even if there is no second fund-raiser).

Hey Igor, as for the upper limit. 10 seems low. How much will we get them for each assuming we order 10. Then again, you are doing the hard work and I have no idea how much time you put into testing / piv plot etc...

10(+2 murder candidates) seems a low number of diodes to you? That's because you've never seen me at work... :undecided:

I don't just quickly throw ready-made parts together...

I will have to PIV-plot every single one of them to select torture candidates from the entire pool.. A larger pool would give us more to choose the murder candidates from, but there is a limit to what i can physically do...


I will have to assemble several of the lasers from this 8x purchase myself! Many people even want me to use my own driver instead of a FlexDrive..


This is why i said 12 (10+2) should be enough. It'll take me a lot of time to do all the required work...

Some of the 8x sleds go to DIY builders, after i plot their diodes.
Other 8x buyers will want a complete laser, cos they might not trust their soldering skills enough yet.

So far the ones that i have to build for others already make up a batch, and that's a lot of work... Especially in the cases where my driver was requested...

If the batch becomes too big, it takes too long to complete it, and some people would have to wait longer. And people don't like waiting.


THAT is the reason for the limit. The limit is ONLY for the number of lasers i have to BUILD...


People who just want a sled for a DIY project could join in to help us get a quantity discount, but in the end, i'll still be the one doing all the PIV plots!

Yes, i too believe we should wait a bit to see what happens with that, however this is not a problem!


I will have like 5 8x's minimum here soon, for the MURDER pool, and i think that's enough for two murders and three lasers!



By the time the experiment is complete, we will know:
- What the 8x's are REALLY capable of? (and a hint of what to expect from 12x's)
- Will the 12x really become available in a few days? (please oh please)
- What will the arrival of 12x do to the 8x cost? (think happy thoughts)

This should help us decide how to proceed....:yh:
Either we go through with the 8x GB (possibly even at a much reduced cost), or we convert this into a 12x Mini-GB, but then again, one will need torturing to death....

however this will turn out: there will be lots of torture, milliwatts and graphs involved!
its just a question between "oh, thats awesome!" and "oh my god i cant believe it!"

I'm gonna want one of each If we can get a good deal on the 12x's, then I might buy one right away, but I'm gonna wait until a 12x gets plotted and killed before I have you build it. You shouldn't have to front the money all by yourself to kill a 12x. I'm sure people will be willing to help out just like for the 8x's.

Anyway, guys, please check the list to see if you're on it, PM me if i forgot someone...

I think we're done here with step #1 = gathering interest. Still left to do:
Step #2 = search for best price, buy, pull sleds, and ship to me (following special instructions from Scopeguy20!)
Step #3 = Work, plot, work, plot, work...
Step #4 = Get the plotted diodes (with or without sleds - your choice) or assembled lasers to the participants...


Time to start arranging this thing!

Ok, question for everyone....

Do we wait for a "few days" to see if higher speed writers come out (EDIT: Unknown preciselly when :undecided: possibly as much as three weeks! could be longer...) and possibly reduce the cost of 8x's, or do we do this thing now at $159 by ordering from NewEgg from outside CA?


I have several people standing by ready to pay for the drives.. I still need to talk to Dave and Bryce about the logistics.



EDIT: Let me explain what the POTENTIAL issue is...
If 12x's ACTUALLY come out within three weeks, the 8x price should drop..
If they don't, the price could go just about anywhere! Could easily be higher again! Another LG 8x model with a slightly different model number but same specs costs $200 at the same store! :wtf:


So i think people on the list should decide if we should wait or go through with it now...

I am standing by to pay also. My opinion, if indeed there is a chance they could go up again as Igor said they might, would be to get them sooner rather than later. but thats just me...ultimatly it is up to you though, so i am cool with what you decide...:beer:

Even if it takes a month or more, fine by me if it saves me hard earned cash.

You're right, they could possible go back up, or newegg could sell out of those drives. I guess we'll have to see what the other people on the list vote for.
