To be fair, lasers aren't quite like cars. I've put builds up for sale in the BST section, and occasionally I'll receive a PM asking "How much would that build be new?" or "How much would you charge for a new one?"
That always perplexes me. I never know how to answer. When is a build "new"? We're pulling parts from all over the place, diodes harvested from new and used consumer electronics, drivers made in another member's toaster oven, heatsinks made on a lathe in someone's garage half way around the world. Are these builds "new" when first assembled? I suppose so.
I think the real question here is "What does being new mean?". I would propose that any value there might be in owning a "new" item of a "hobby" nature, really comes from the relationship that first owner has with the original builder. If you buy a new build from Daguin, there's a sense of peace in knowing that you've got something of quality that the person you bought it from would stand behind. That's probably the only thing that often disappears when a build is not "new" (IE, when you're buying it from someone other than the builder). You don't really know what the true history of that laser is.
However, in this case, we 4can look back at that February thread and verify that the laser was built by Daguin. We know it was LPM'd by a vet. We know that the workmanship will have been good. We know that it actually WAS sold to the individual who is now selling it here. The history / backstory is intact and verifiable.
So I guess I'm left thinking that the only real depreciation that this laser might be subject to would be the uncertainty of not knowing how it has been treated in the intervening month since that initial purchase. However, counteracting this potential depreciation, is the reality that the original seller (Daguin) sold the laser at a discount, during a time in which he was specifically discounting items for a purpose. He even acknowledged selling below cost for this purpose.
I think it balances out. At $100, any 445nm laser that can be verified as having come from a vet builder like Daguin, seems like a great deal.
