.5 watt JDS Uniphase laser-from Bio Sytems 3700 DNA Analyzer-how much??

I just disassembled a BioSystems 3700 DNA Analyzer. The machine was in perfect condition but the manufacturer has stopped making/selling the performance polymer that is needed to run this machine so I was asked to take it apart and away.

This machine sold for $350,000.00 USD in 2001 and now they have made it useless-there should be a law against this!

I found a laser inside with the power supply and I was wondering how much it is worth? It said .5 watt JDS Uniphase.

The laser was recently changed, I think it has gotten weak-I have that part as well.

There was also a big CCD "camera" in it, I have no idea how much that is worth as well.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated, I just want to sell it for a fair price.

The .5W number is only a generic sticker they put on those systems. It's a JDSU argon laser with an output between 5mW and 40mW depending on the model and wavelength(s). These kinds of systems are usually sold for $250-500 depending on condition, age, and measured output (an indicator of remaining lifetime). That's just for the laser and it's PSU. It's not uncommon to see whole sequencers like yours selling for $250-500 for the whole unit. The shipping is what kills.. it's easier to sell the laser by itself than the whole sequencer.

Thanks for the information.

If anyone is interested in buying this unit please call me at 514-836-4615

Here are some pictures, I can't read the label in the pictures I took with my phone so I will probably have to re-shoot those or just list what it says on the label.

I also have the fan for cooling the laser.

I will sell everything for $250.00 plus shipping. I think that is a fair price.

I am going to post more pictures.

^While your request is certainly more than fair, I would like to point out that the seller is asking a minimal price for this system.. In other words this is the price that a system with high hours and reduced output might fetch. Even if it is an old tube with some degradation, it's worth this price IMO. Just having a JDSU PSU is a good thing.. you can then buy used cylindrical JDSU heads w/o PSUs and run them on the PSU you would already have by buying this system... Plus, for all we know this system might be very healthy. There also seems to be two heads with this system, so one of them is likely to be healthy.

I can't really read the pictures, can you post the information on the tags or post a clearer picture?

It looks like it's designed for 120v operation - if so I'd be interested in buying it as long as the argon laser fires.

I've been looking to get a 120v psu for my Uniphase argons so this looks like a good opportunity to get one and expand my argon library =P

oh i have no doubt its a good price its just with my limited research in argon's so far i was just wanting an output power to see if its worth it to me before snatching them up......

but i am very interested in this as this does seem to be a good price for 2 argon heads and a power supply if in fact they do laze easily without much modification.

edit just re read your post and can see that its hopefully 40mw

I know the machine was working perfectly before I took it apart. It was still under power and connected to a computer.

I took it apart in the lab because it was too big to fit through the doorway.

My client has a cancer research laboratory in his upstairs bedroom!

The day after I took it apart I went back and sawzalled the frame in half so I could remove the carcass without taking the whole door frame off.

The machine had been brought in before renovations were done and it was easier to take apart the machine and cut it in half than it would of been to cut the door frame and carry it down the freshly finished stairway.

I was paid to take it apart and away so I just want a fair as possible price for some of the components that I know are in perfect working condition.

I think the laser was changed recently because the other one was getting weak-maybe it can be repaired.

What can this kind of laser be used for?

I know if I test it and see the laser working I will probably keep it:)

Fausto,

Can you give us the model numbers on the laser heads? If it's a multiline, i'd be interested...
