can i clarify something? i believed i focused it to infinity as the dot did not change in size as i pointed across my house (9 meteres). but when i tried to shine it further outta my house i'm not able to see the dot? is it just me ?

If the dot changes very little at 9 meters, then it's close to perfect collimation.  Mine can be focused like that to 8 meters, which is long enough for most of my applications.

The dot is visible only at fairly short distances, since the human eye cannot perceive 405nm light very well.  A few less nm and you're into the UV spectrum.

By the way, I call my laser an "Enerbeam MN <10mW".  Your mileage may vary.

oh does it mean that blurays cannot be used for long distance pointing?

405nm is near ultra violet range as much as some deep red laser that are around 700nm are near infra red spectrum. Both are on very edges of human vision and only few nanometers away from invisible frequencies. That being said, 405nm is not best laser for long range pointing as your eye has hard time focusing/adjusting to tihs frequency even when you point it at the wall sometimes. Results will greatly vary on what color/texture surface you are hitting with your 405nm beam. If you want something visible for long ranges, choose colors that are as close to 555nm as thats where out eyes see the best. (or around 500nm in dark conditions)

However,
this frequency has some amazing advantages aside from very nice and rare looks. It appears different on many different surfaces as it makes them fluoresce. If you find certain clean white surface outside even few hundred feet away, you will see a bright blue dot very clearly - much brighter than red pointer at this power. Sometimes I just swing this laser fast across the room with light off to see different reflections and shades of blue in form of stripes as the dot crosses the room fast. Colors range from green to purple. Even red and pink are often seen.

hi,
visible range really depends on two things. Divergence, which is in your controll as it has manual focus, and surface the dot is hitting.
What I mean by surface, is that your eye is not very capable of focuseing and seeing true 405nm purple dot. If you ever get 405nm laser, you will only then understand what everyone is talking about. Its weird and beautiful in the same time. Sometimes it looks as if dot is not hitting the wall surface, but some really transparent glass right in front of it, or that the dot is floating in the air in front of the wall.

But if you hit certain white surfaces such as white paper, it will turn into very bright light blue and will be like 10 times more visible all of a sudden, giving you much more range.

All in all, this laser is great for indor experiments, pointing around and fluorescing different objects than pointing at long range targets.

I finally almost have enough to buy one, I have $150, hoping to get more soon. I'd rather not buy one off of eBay, so how much extra would one of those NYC cubes cost?
