Introducing my high current test load. It features 5x 5A continuous current SMD diodes and a 1 Ohm 1% 25W SMD resistor. These diodes are so beefy they are rated for 15Amps peak! The diodes have plenty of thermal mass to dissipate heat via its SMD copper pads(bottom and top layer). It has been tested to run continuously @ 2Amps. It can handle 5A in relatively short durations (~30secs), but I strongly recommend heatsinking the diodes to ensure durability(RAM heatsinks will do).

It is selectable between 2,3,4, and 5 diodes. As with all diodes, Vfw changes with current, there is now a voltage table printed on the PCB.

Re: 3A Test Loads by JIB - Pre Order Now!

Cute little boards... nicely laid out...

Looks beautiful.

One question - you might be simulating a 12x at 500mA. Wouldn't that imply a testload Vf of just 5V ? (not enough to match a 12x's Vf)

5V is fine for testing BR ... all you need is enough voltage above the single cell voltage to get boost drivers boosting.

I think I need a bit more convincing on that point.

The higher a boost driver needs to boost the voltage to, the less current it is often able to provide.

I can see a scenario where XYZ driver can provide 500mA of output when boosting to 5V, but when boosting to 6V it can only provide say 400mA (or some level of current less than 500mA).

I don't think this is entirely hypothetical either - the NJG is an example of such a driver where I've observed this behaviour. Granted, it won't sacrifice your diode, but rather just give you an overly ambitious sense of the actual current you'll actually achieve.

Re: 3A Test Loads by JIB - Pre Order Now!

That is correct, but the point of this test load is first and foremost for high current applications for which only 4 diodes are needed. The 5th is provided so you don't loose the ability to set currents for vetted boosters in the sub 1A range. The only thing the extra diode would tell you is if the maker of the boost driver is making false claims.

Re: 3A Test Loads by JIB - Now In Stock!

First and only batch now ready for shipping ... only 8 test loads available. See OP for details.

Added heatsink example pic.

7 left.

Those are nice boards. My other Jib test load is still going strong though, guess you shouldn't make such nice products and maybe I'd need to order another one :D

Re: 3A Test Loads by JIB - Now In Stock!

:bumpit: 6 still available.

Got mine the other day. Looks and works great thanks Jib
