umm, how much for the host + a pair of goggles for 445nm? (you do sell goggles right?) and ALL i need beyond this host is a diode in a module and batteries right? do i need a tool to press the driver?

We carry $17 basic goggles and $42 Eagle Pair. You will also need a lens and focusing ring in addition to what you mentioned, but you don't need to "press the driver". Only solder the driver leads to the diode. See here.

These very simple and complete kits are still available. Includes an unmarked C6 host, aluminum heat sink, 1.25A driver installed, GITD lens cap and an Allen wrench for tightening the heat sink setscrew. Just add your 445nm diode, diode module and lens (also available from the Survival Laser website).

What driver do these use? I read they use a current regulated buck driver. is it designed by survival lasers or a flashlight driver from dx?

The source of our driver(s) is proprietary, but you can read about the 1.25A version here.

Can I use this host kit with a 405 instead of a 445 diode or is the driver putting out too much power?

That's good to hear about your son's field experience! As long as he keeps the dust out of the lens and diode area it should be OK.

This host kit produces too much current for a 405nm build. I can provide one with an approximately 445mA output driver suitable for a BDR diode for $70, and include the violet anodized heatsink if you like. :) It would utilize the same driver we use in the SL-V parts bundles.

Note that a 405nm build should use 2 X 3.6V Li-Ion batteries for full power of about 500mW with a standard lens. LiFePO4 batteries will give a reduced output due to the lower voltage.
