Don't use regular sun glasses to protect your eyes. I have read that your pupils get large because of the shade therefore letting in more laser light. Some body else could probably elaborate more on this but I think you get the point.

If you measure the voltage across the diode, we can guess the current but the best way is to desolder it and check the current properly (with an 1 ohm resistor). As douglas said, don't use sunglasses as actual protection - though they may help you to focus the dot smaller. Opening the lens makes a difference to burning power - more than you would expect. If you can get orange filters they also help reduce the glare, but again ARE NOT effective protection. Only certified goggles will be able to withstand direct hits for any length of time.

That apply to all lasers execpt the blu-rays. Sunglasses usally have UV filter wichs usually blocksthe 405nm light too.

thanks for all the help everyone!!, ill probly get a dmm asap because after i get this to burn somthing or i kill it then i wanna make a green lol

yea i guess ill unsolder it to make it a accurate reading for current, where exactly do i unsolder? a diode lead and put the 1ohm between the diode and the driver? then i just measure the voltage on the resistor? and yea i kno i dot use sunglasses for protection just wanted to get a quick more precise look at the dot

just one more thing, before i go put it on the dmm to see where current is at, should i get a cr123 battery? or will the 9v possibly work?

it is not nessary to unsolder anything just put the DMM in the ma mode and put it in line with the battery (between one of the battery leads and the driver) this will measure total current of the circuit.

Or put a 1ohm restistor between the board and the battery and measure mv acroos it, both methods will give you the answer.

1 X cr123 battery will not be enough voltage, a fresh PP3 9v will work for a short while, long enough to test anyway.

You never came back on my query about what your lens nut looks like, small backhole is no good.

Excuse my ignorance, but my understanding of the diode is to let curent through in one direction but not the other (reverse polarity) so why are these load circuits incorperating 4-6 diodes to create a test load?
Please be gentle I only have basic knowledge on electronics.

A silicon diode or any diode for that matter, has a forward voltage drop depending on its structure. A silicon diode has ~0.7 volt drop and three of them in series provides ~2.1 volts. The resistor adds to the load and provides a convienent point to measure current using Ohm's law.

ROG8811: hey sorry yea it was a small hole, and it was a black plastic bit, i made the hole much bigger, didnt go all the way to the edge with it but it should be plenty bigger.

Pyro: hey man, no havnt gotten a dm yet, a little short on money cuz of girls b-day being today, not to mention im looking for a job lol, and also when i was in school and after completin my lab i noticed i forgot any battery at all :whistle: lol and i didnt bother hooking it upto a power source even though i should have just to test it.

but yea im gunna get maybe 2 cr123a's? and a dm of my own

Hey finnaly went and got a dmm from wal-mart lol the EXACT same one i looked at from radioshack but for about $15-16 cheaper

anyways now hopefully i can get it to work with a 9v later on:can:

well i hooked up the 9v to my meter and it reads about a 6.8ish on volts and then i measured current and it starts at about 170ma and decreases to about 130ish is it normal to do that? and can you just hook it up terminal to terminal like that for current?

ok well i think the driver might be bad because, i used an led for testig and i opened up the circuit right after the led and measured the current there and it was going down just like measureing straight to the battery, any ideas?
