I read your post in another read. The phr is not in the 8x fam. in terms of strength from weak to strong it goes like this. KES (plastation sled), PHR (xbox hd dvd add on), 4x, 6x, 8x. hope this helps

Insert the SF-AD112 between the KES-400A and the PHR-803T. It's fairly rare. I got mine from Daguin.

oh i totaly knew that a PHR is not an 8x lol!

wouldnt it be great though. i think you may have misread whatever post it was that you read.

is it safe to say you cannot find an 8x for less than $200?

I have a consideration about this "power versus speed" thing ..... Premise that i'm not a burner maker, anyway i'm working with lasers from "a little while" :p, so, maybe isn't completely wrong :)

That what i mean, basically, is that the writing speed also have to do with the lenght of the pulses you shoot from your diode, and that the diodes that have a certain maximum level of power and mW in CW mode, can easily doubled and more, in pulsed mode, like the normal leds (well, ok, not exactly like a normal led, i know).

So, if, for example, at, say, 4x, you need to shoot pulses of 1ms at 100mw for write the disk (the numbers are indicative, i don't have way for measure the real ones), for write at 8x, you need to shoot pulses at 0.5ms, but this way you can drive the diode at 200mW ..... so, there's a risk, maybe, that dismantling a more high speed sled, you just find a diode of the previous serie, just drived with an optimized driver and better cooled ?

I know it's not so easy, there's also to considerate the collective medium time of working respect the pulsed power, duty cycles, and so on, but as example, i have some phr803 sleds i'm experimenting with, and powering the diode at just 85mA on the sled, it become really too much hot in few time, for a long work like a reader have to do, so probably the diode in the normal use is drived at very less power of the maximum that it can hold ..... and this drive me to think that, also some burners sleds, does the same, mean, increasing the speed, just increasing the power and optimizing the driver.

It's just a personal reflection ..... anyway, cause i've never found a single part number on these diodes, i suppose there's no way for get datasheets and be sure about that

As far as i know, no.

I have on my distributors catalogs only 8x units, and got in one of the commercial news mails ads that Sony is working (but still not producing, just researching) on a 12x unit ..... but don't dare to imagine the price, when it come on the market, LOL!

I think you used the search button a bit too late... but at least you used it before anybody like laserbee or pseudolobster got on you :D.

I asked for evaluation samples ..... they replied no problems ..... 130.000 Yen (1365 $, more or less) each one, plus taxes, fees and shipping costs .....

Now i need only to find the money ..... with a bank robbery, maybe :wtf: ..... (LOL)
