Re: What kind of metal are the 803t sleds made out

Just fished all my harvested sleds from the trash. Four KES, four PHR and seven Sony DVD. I noticed the dvd sleds feel much heavier, so I gues they are made of plain cast iron. Does this make any sense? Woudn't the sony drive be much slower this way, or is it just the other way around, that the B-R and HD-DVD have a speed upgrade? Or it is it because the blue's have a smaller motor because it requires less force to move the sled at the same acceleration?

Most things on optical media are burned linearly, so there's no real "seeking" and the speed at which it scans to different tracks shouldn't make much of a difference... in fact, from what I recall all drives do this pretty slowly... it takes some 3 or 4 seconds to seek from the beginning of the disk to the outside edge.. where watching a movie it takes two hours to make the same trip... besides, that little stepper motor with a worm gear is bound to be able to support several pounds, I'm sure a couple grams wouldn't make much of a difference.

I did notice though that the DVD sleds I had laying around seemed to be a heavier metal... I wonder if maybe they chose the magnesium alloy for its resistance to thermal expansion or something...

I have a video I'm in the process of rendering right now and when it's done I'll upload it and share. My camcorder sucks in the dark but it was really cool.

I too had to keep blowing on mine to keep it burning. I defenitely recommend taking EVERYTHING off the sled before torchin it though.

Didn't you hear? We all stopped liking you sometime last week.

J/K, but srsly, this place moves slow in the middle of a monday night in north america.

How hard was it to light? You used a propane torch?

yeah that should work ok.

I never had to blow on mine, I just used a propane torch to start it and once the reaction actually started it just kept going on its own.

I didn't have to blow on mine either. Once it started that sucker wasn't stopping.

Well it looks like Kenom beat me to it with the video. ;D I may have to one up it with something "special" to help the sled burn a little faster. [smiley=evil.gif]
