If you can get the 8X LD it would be great.

Look for about 300mw of output.

Dave just reported 1/2 Watt with the new high NA lens.

There may be some restrictions on buying them.

I know Nichia has many of those restrictions.

fist it's not 400mw it's 500mw ,second not that much expensive because sanyo or sony created 12x there are a war betweeen the constructors, third very hard to contact the suppliers but it's in process

I don't hold out hope for these. You're looking at hundreds, if not thousands, of USD per diode. Buying diodes straight from manufacturers has been tried by people on here, and it has never worked out. It always comes out cheaper to buy the sleds, since the sled makers are buying diodes from diode makers in much higher quantities than we could ever hope to achieve.

These makers don't care much about selling 100 diodes, they care about BIG buyers. Good luck, but don't hold your breathe.

pullbangdead is right..Not long ago I attempted to buy a single 5mW 405nm diode directly from Nichia to see if their diodes are any different from the ones we see here routinely. Long story short, they didn't want to sell me one at all, and when I finally convinced them to sell me one (as an engineering sample) they quoted me a price of $2000 per diode.. no joke.

Needless to say, after a hearty laugh I hung up on them..

Unless you plan on buying a million units or more, diode manufacturers will not sell to you.

If you do manage to acquire an engineering sample, as stated before, it will cost thousands of dollars for a single diode.

Here is the cheapest NEW 405nm diode you can buy in quantities of 1: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=425-2697-ND

It's 100mW and it's $1200. You're not going to find a better deal than that.
