After the fun I had here (http://laserpointerforums.com/f38/mistake-netted-me-950mw-405nm-12x-68043.html), my interest in 405s was rekindled. So I grabbed a number of 12x diodes from Hank's closeout thread last month, and decided to have some fun with a few new builds. My first challenge was finding a better driver.

Obviously 1085s were out, since I wanted to hit 600mA with two cells. I took a shot at using a 2xAMC7135 driver (in fact, the same drivers I've used for 635s), but it turned out that 700mA was just a bit too current, and a few diodes died in the process.

Then I found Kiyoukan's new linear drivers with their insanely low dropout (0.5V?) http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/new-linear-driver-st-drive-67549.html. I ordered them unset, and added my own 805 SMD resistors to set the current for a safe (right) current of 600mA.

Amazing! I built two in SH-032 hosts to see how consistently I could build high powered 405s. Using 2x AW IMR 18350 cells, my laser bee measured:

Laser 1: Aixiz (690mW) G1 (825mW)
Laser 2: Aixiz (750mW) G1 (870mW)

On the LaserBee, it takes about 60 seconds to get a reading. By that time, the laser looses a bit of it's power. On an Ophir sensor, which is able to take a reading much faster, I was able to observe peak powers of ~910mW and ~950mW for lasers 1 and 2 respectively.

Not bad! Pretty irresponsible currents to set these diodes to, but they were certainly a lot of fun to build, and I love Kiyoukan's new driver.

What i don't get is why it takes 20 seconds to erach 600mW ? or is that just a LPM lag ?

LPM lag. It takes a TEC-based sensor a bit of time to register the heat. By the time that 45 to 60 seconds has elapsed, some lasers will have passed their peak. Hence, something like an Ophir can capture a peak power that a TEC-based LPM might miss.

At least - that's my understanding of the phenomena.

Could these drivers be the answer to my thread about a LOC linear driver? The mission was to feed the diode with 500mA with a linear driver using only one li-on. We talked about alot of drivers and we agreed that it was not possible without some boosting ;(
This one as .5 dov. Any thoughts?

Yep - I remember that thread!

And yep, Kiyoukan's driver is the answer :)

I'm glad i went a bit off topic there xp
But since i dont live in the US, shipping would probably be expensier than the driver and i think they are out of stock..

I'm not in the US - and shipping wasn't bad for me :)
