:yabbem: So I was out on the docks shining my ~400 mw O-like 405nm out across the ocean, enjoying a few beers and having a generally good time. As I got up to leave it fell from my pocket and in my scramble to pick it up, it was kicked into the ocean. Now I know this thing is waterproof but that isn't gonna help me get it off the bottom of the harbor, truly sad this was a great little laser that is now doomed to be embedded in the fossil record.

Of course I want another 405nm and I was very happy with the O-like model at just around $115 shipped for ~400 mw, anyone know who might have the best kit around at a similar price?

Wow if that happened to me it would completely destroy my week, im sorry for your losses but now you know not to take your lasers out to the harbour ;)

well you can build your own 700mw blu-ray with a bdr diode, a module and a host :D

you can build one your self for "that price" ...
but i dont think it could survive if it fell in the sea..

Sorry for your loss. Being the neurotic fellow i am, when i use my lasers i either keep a lanyard on or wear it around my neck and when they're in my pockets i usually tie the lanyard to my belt. But i've lost a laser from it falling out of my pocket too.

Uh ..... sorry for the loss, but ..... never heard about safety straps / cords ?

When i was 16, i lost my first DMM (fall from a roof ..... don't ask :p), and from that time (DMMs was absurdly high cost, in these years, not like today), when i work on a boat or in any environment that put my high cost tool in risk to vanish for a fall, all them are hooked with a wrist strap, a neck strap or a thin nylon rope hooked somewhere ..... it can be a good idea to use the same principle for lasers, if used in "risky" places.

I'm thinking about those necklaces or wristlaces with a plastic or metal release hook that are used normally for flashdisks or cellphones ..... sometimes you can also find them as merchandising or for free as advertising items ..... i'm not sure how do you call them, so i added an image ..... something similar to this:

Hehe.. i wonder how much crap you'd surface before getting the laser doing that.

The again, if you need a collection of cans, shopping carts, bikes and boat anchors, why not give it a go. I'm fairly sure a couple of Nd magnets would be able to lift the laser, dispite the aluminium body. Virtually all batteries contain ferromagnetic parts.

..... a pair of these ones, maybe ? ..... then you need a robust rope, if you don't want to lost also the magnets (but probably you can also lift an anchor, with a pair of them :p )

the safety straps are a great idea, should have thought of that earlier. I guess if I can somehow get the laser out of the water and it still works, I will be able to truly verify O-like's claim that these things are waterproof. Going out today at low tide to see what I can do, wish me luck haha.
