Forgive me for asking such questions.  I've been searching thread after thread to find some info that I can understand with my basic electronic knowledge.  If I annoy anybody here by asking these questions, please, let me know.  Otherwise, thanks for your help!
I just wanted to be sure.

Is this diagram acceptable for use of building a DIY Blu-ray driver?

Correct on both counts...... You can use a PP3 9v battery for the blue ray if you want... but 7.2v (2 X RCR123A )for the red is about the best.

2. For burning red, what's the min. mW 650nm diode (with the pot adjusted @ max) with: A. 3v B. 7.2v C. 9v?

<--- P.S. the blu-ray in my picture is kipkay's anti driver set up. It is still very new as I hardly used it, but I want to do it right. ;)

Yes the PS3 Ld is a Blue ray

A. 3v will not be enough voltage as the regulator needs 3 volts over the voltage for the LD.
B. Perfect
C. Although a PP3 will supply enough voltage it will not supply sufficient current to run a burner.

You may put in any voltage from 7.2v to 34v and it will not effect the output of the the LD as this is a constant current drive circuit. As too how many mw, sorry not a clue, all I can say is that there are enough of them to light matches and cigarettes...Burst balloons.....smoke dark coloured plastic....you get the idea :)

Just to let you know:

The blu-ray driver will put out 1ma (pot to max resistance) to 38ma (pot to least resistance).

The "burner" driver will put out 12ma to 250ma.


Also, for input voltage, I'd stick with under 9V for the red because if you put in higher voltage, it will work, but it will make the regulator (LM317) get hot more quickly and probably require a heatsink.

One other thing, and it was very remiss of me not to do it properly, the drawing of the blue ray laser diode does not show the correct pin configuration, it has 5 pins not 3 as shown.....Rectified below :)

Thanks for your drawings! They are quite understandable for me. With a talent for soldering, a basic understanding in electronics, an open mind, and a little imagination, one can easily learn if spoken to in the right language. :) I was going to digitally edit the three pins, but I was lazy. At least I changed the strips on the resistor. :p

As for everyones explanition, I am most greatful. Can't say I've ever understood better. I can easily build this. I plan on making (2) of each (R & B-R).

Another question: How about a 5.5v Li from the RPL? -1.7v of 7.2v? Has anybody tried that?

That explains why I couldn't find the Blue ray circuit drawing on my computer :)

I have altered the voltage on the drawing as well, with this regulator you will need 9v to drive a blue ray (7.2v would be ok with a 7805 based driver).

33ohms seems to be the one that everyone uses, the only reason the above circuits show a pot is that I like take it easy and be sure of the current is as expected. Make sure you measure the ma's as some bluerays have different characteristics.
