Testing PS3 Blu Ray Diode

Hey guys, I just replaced my friends PS3 by replacing the optical pickup on the condition that i get to keep the old one. Anyway, I extracted the Blu Ray diode off of the old pickup and i soldered a wire to the ground and positive. I connected this directly to a CR123A battery just to see if it would turn on at all, it didn't. Does this mean i need to build this circuit? Or is the diode just bad? Doe anyone know a better way of testing them?

I used the search button and came up empty handed, only found a few articles on google.

I understand it's for a RL Diode, but this is what the website says needs different:
Voltage needed by regulator to make it work 3v

Additional voltage to get long life between battery changes 1.2v.

Add that up and you get 9.0volts.

Generally, directly hooking up a diode will kill it. Essentially instantly. Not sure on the specs of this diode, but it's never a good idea to direct drive anything. And yes, always have one of those on handy (I have an adjustable one with a 25Ohm pot on hand) in order to test things like this.

PS3 diode, like all other 405nm diodes out there, require around 5.0V for proper operation on given current conditions.

You've connected it to a 3V source. It does not have enough voltage to turn it on. But directly driving (that is, connecting them directly to batteries), is a VERY bad idea and your diode will, as was said, die instantly.

You need to build a constant current regulator circuit, and feed the diode around 25mA for long life. It'll output around 10mW IIRC.

I will definitely start building a driver, if i find the diode still works, i will make it smaller. lol thanks for the help guys! :)

okay, i hooked up the same driver as in the picture (very basic)
i read somewhere that it is supposed to have ~200mA
the laser is not very bright at all, i know you said 10mw, but i think it should be a lot brighter than it is...
im reading about 50 with the pot maxed, should i remove a resistor?
my power supply is 9v 500mA, I am by no means good at calculating amps based on ohms lol

I uhh.. do not entirey understand what you just said...

Your driver is supposed to give 35mA maximum to the diode. I'd reccomend 25mA.

You're reading "50" of what? Tomatoes?
Power supply seems good.

What resistance did you put between LM's OUT and ADJ pins? You should calculate correct value and place correct resistor, that is:
1.25 / Desired current in A = Needed resistance in Ohms

In your case, it's 1.25 / 0.025 = 50 ohms.

well there's 2-10 ohm resisters and a 100ohm pot.
it was reading 50mA,

anyway its still dim as hell, i think i might buy a more powerful diode, any suggestions for a blu ray diode/heatsink?

If it was at some point powered with 50mA, it's dead. Bringing the current down won't magically revive it.

Yeah, get yourself either a PHR-803t sled, or SF-AW210 one. They will give you around 100mW, or 150mW (respectively).

it works fine though, its just not very bright...maybe it is only putting out 10mw...but even if it is that's not the power I'm looking for; i want slight beam visibility.

it's a ps3 diode.. its not supposed to be bright..
get a phr805 or sfaw210

If its a 12x quite a few people run them around 500mA to make around 600mW

WHAT are you serious?? they output 600mw, oh w8 arent they bdr diodes?

btw whyd you buy a 130dollar blu-ray burner? coulda just got the diode for like 45 bucks :D

w8 im pretty sure they also have a 300mw red diode in them dont chuck anything away yet :D
