Strange output from PHR-803t at low power

So, I just got my PHR build up and running, and I noticed that at low power, there seems to be output alongside the main output that is definitely not just 405nm.

goninanbl00d suggested that something inside the diode's can is fluorescing, and I find this to be the most plausible answer.

Anyone else witnessed this weirdness?

Take the Aixiz module, and look out the output on a wall. This will tell you which is the problem Window or Lens.

If that was a pic with the lens, then that beam profile would be more f*cked than those blonde hookers you find on street corners. Terrible analogy, yes, I know.

Anyway.

This phenomena is observable in quite a handful of diodes, including red and 445nm diodes running below threshold (so laser emission doesn't drown out these fluorescence lines).

It's not caused by contaminants in the can, nor is it a 'problem'. Rather, it is caused by contaminants in the diode's die itself, left during manufacturing. Although the manufacturing process is pretty damn good for what it is, it isn't perfect, and impurities do make their way into the dies. These emissions don't affect the operation of the laser diode itself, and are completely swamped by the resonant wavelength in normal operation.

One of the veterans here who works with laser diodes, pullbangdead, may be able to shed some more light on this (pun intended).

There have been multiple threads about this, and references in the FAQ too, but seeing as the forum search function is downright horrible, it's not worth the time trying to find those many-year old threads.

That was a picture with the lens. I have a 6x BR from GGW sled and it behaves similar. The main dot is almost gone and the two different spot colors left and right are more explicit. I think the optical resonator on the die is damaged and the light can't be centered at one spot.

That's with a lens, but defocused. I've dropped the thing a couple times, that could be it :p

It's also not press-fit quite right, and I need to swap the driver out.

As goninan suggested, what you're basically seeing is LED emission, not laser emission. The die itself being rather similar in structure to an InGaN LED, is going to put out some non-lasing, non-coherent, non-monochromatic spectra ... At least that's what I've gleaned from the discussions in the past.

Interesting. I posted it because I've never seen such an effect in a red diode.
