So I snagged one of the brand spanking new GBW-H20L's off ebay (and saved just over a $100 dollars on it).

So anyways, it arrived at my house the other day and I was excited to take it apart and get the 6x out of it.

I've posted the pictures of the dissection. Any one else familiar with this drive??

I'm anxiously awaiting my Purple to Silver Fade/Polished Kryton barrel to put this puppy in.

The 6x diode has no special markings on it, so I'm not sure if it is just the same diode used in all the other 6x burners.

Any of you 6x'ers want to give me some input on what kind of mA's you're running through your beast diode?

Also, do you think it would be worth it to open-can this diode?

Careful with the diode -- The window isn't in there real tight.

Dr Lava and I posted many times about mA for the 6x. I think DrLava stopped at 130 mA with about 110 mW. The last data I can find has me at 160 mA and 167 mW. I'm beyond that now but you are for now on your own above that.

wow really?? I thought for sure that the 6x's were pushing 200mW???

geez... i have 803ts that are more powerful than that.

thats pricy!!

hopefull you can get it going strong!

is there any advantages with these over the 803's?

Some dude challenged me to a double dog dare and as I recall, I ran out of mA around 190 mA I think .  My Kenom "Purple People Eater" is putting out 220 mW.
peak 247 mW.

wowzers. i can settle for 220mW of 405nm no problem for 180 bucks. \

by the way hemlock, that barrel is snazzy.

Warmed up, I'm stable at 230 mW. That barrel is a kenom which I modified and added special paint. His new product is similar to this. I machined a couple prototypes for him. Look for newer stuff !!!

Eeeep! I guess I'm not a true laser enthusiast, but I would have used that for watching/burning bluray disks. :p

EDIT: Could give me a link to the auction, I am seriously thinking about getting one for writing disks

its a nasty drive to operate. you need minimum of a 3.2ghz processor... and who has that?  plus i have a ps3 to watch blu-rays on.

just search gbw-h20l in google if you want to buy one. there is one on ebay right now but its for $239.99 starting bid.

I burned up my first 6x at a cost of $329  Look for the history here on the curves.

This is the first try at the GBW drive instead of the GGW drive. (I think) Hopefully it is the same diode.

I've got my 6 X (GGW) running at 140mA's. It is putting out over 180mW's. But that is using a Meredith glass lens.

Mike, your custom purple Kryton is awesome!

My GGW was running at around 190mA putting out 200mW through a regular aixiz acrylic. It's dead now, but not because of the current. I heated it waaaaaaaaaay to much on a driver swap and the power dropped to 150mW. It was the beginning of the end. I then cranked it to 230mA just for fun to get my power back up to 180mW ;D I dont suggest this... it lasted about two weeks after that. But it was going for a couple months at 190mA with no problems until I messed with it. This GBW sled looks IDENTICAL to the GGW sled. You should take some pictures of any numbers you can find on the sled, and I'll compare them to a spare GGW sled I have here. I'm positive that they're the same sled though. Pretty awesome! Looks like we've found a (slightly) cheaper alternative for 6x power. Some may argue that the PHR diode can crank out as much power, and it can, but they rarely last more than a couple weeks at these levels. The 6x is a beast!

I too am awaiting the next kryton before tackling my next 6x project. Hopefully the wait will be over soon!!!

Hey mike, what current/output are you up to now?
