Should I buy an 803-T or 150mw diode?

Either I buy a

150mw 405nm Blu-ray laser diode for $7 +$10 shipping
405nm 150mw burning blu-ray laser diode. USA 3 day Ship - eBay (item 270539667100 end time Mar-11-10 08:02:11 PST)

or

A PHR-803T Xbox 360 HD-DVD sled

http://cgi.ebay.com/PHR-803T-for-xb...tZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item27ab393d1a

I plan to take this 405nm 5mW Violet Purple Blue Ray Blue Laser Pointer Pen
and just swap the diodes.

405nm 5mW Violet Purple Blue Ray Blue Laser Pointer Pen - eBay (item 200444467072 end time Mar-29-10 10:48:13 PDT)

I'm trying to save money yet make a really good laser pen.

You can not just swap out the diodes. The driver in that pen will most likely be set to a certain current range and will not be adjustable. The diode used in this pen will be a low range violet diode capable of <50mw. If you simply swap the diodes you will not get any increase, you may not even meet the threshold V or ma... so you will need a driver with the diode.

With two AAA batteries you will need a Flexdrive to buck/boost the current for your diode. If you want to run a PHR in a pen host, I suggest 100ma max current output since there is very little heat sinking in a pen like this.

Hope that helped -Adrian

Welcome
Unless it says what drive that 150mW diode is from I wouldn't buy it.
A PHR-803T is quite good for your 1st build but like bobhaha said you will most likely need to replace the driver. The Flexdrive is the best IMO but O-like.com also has a Blu-ray driver thats less expensive.
Your going to need goggles if you plan to use a higher power diode like PHR-803T. Too many objects around your home can cause reflections & that can damage your eyes.

That "150mW" diode IS probably the same diode that is in the PHR-803T sled. With the current set to 110mA (their max recommended and within the range of the PHR), the diode will probably give you ~95mW through a stock lens.

Buy a PHR sled from someone here or I'll sell you a PHR diode in it's stock heat sink for $10 shipped in the US

I have opened several of those lasers. ALL of them have had a pot.

So he can turn up the driver on those type of pens without a issue then?
Would you know if they tend to have a max current thats safe for PHR so he might be able to get away without a test load?
Probably shouldn't assume his pen will have a safe upper limit even if others might.
See test load schematic here as well as other useful infomation.

I've turned a lot of them up. Some have burned out. Most were OK. I usually got ~75mW out of them. IIRC the best I got was 110mW. The worst (besides the ones that burned out) was ~40mW

shit... now building a strong laser seems really complicated... I thought that as long as you have the right driver you can put whatever mw diode in.
and this was still after I read mfo's post.

So i'll most likely buy the 803-T or get mine off dave.

How much do you think I'd need to spend to make a good burning one?
I'm trying to spend atleast 50 dollars if not less.

I am aware I need to get protective eye wear. I might get one off of thescopeguy

So as a list of what to get.

- 803-T Laser diode or the one from Dave
- A host *should i take that cheap one from ebay?*
- A new diver? *flex drive is like 23 dollars!*
- Eye protection.
*how would I put a button on the driver?
what would you add or change on this list to optimize it?
* do I need a laser housing unit. or does the host cover it already.

I kinda wished there was a guide that shows you how to put one together step by step. I havent found one yet.

The "803T" and what I have are the same diode

It is just complicated enough to keep children from making one easily.

You need to learn a bit more before you get started. Reading first will save you time, frustration, and money. You can start by reading the thread linked in my signature below.

You can lower the price of the driver by getting a Rkcstr or building your own

Pen style pointers are a more difficult build. There is very little room in there for errors. Trust me (and everyone else). You ARE going to make some errors while learning how to build a laser

There are many step-by-step tutorials in this forum. You need to read through the tutorials section and follow some links to get to them though

The "button" is part of the host/housing, NOT part of the driver.

dave thats the exact thing i've been reading a couple times. I thought there was a button on some drivers.

Also how many diodes do you have? and do you accept money being mailed?

There are some red and blue pointers (especially pen style) coming out of China that have the button on the driver. However, the drivers we use here (flexdrive, Rkcstr, DDL, etc) do not have a switch/button onboard. When you read through some of the tutorials, you will see that the VAST majority of what we build use a switched host/housing. If you pull one of the Newwish style eBay pointers apart, you will find a switch/button on its driver

I have 9 PHR's, in their heat sinks, on hand.

I'll take your money any way you want to send it to me ;) Checks and money orders are safer, but you are the one that is taking the chance in the mail so it is up to you.

If you want/need my contact info, please send me a Personal Message (PM).

Peace,
dave
