Thanks LarryDFW. I love to see Bluray moving along. Hoping 3D movies will push this into mainstream.
As nice as 445 is I want >1W 405 more. Produce cheap <385nm & I'll really be in love.

I don't. I can't stand 3d movies, and i'll be glad when this fad is over. They'll always be just a gimmick until it's manageable without glasses.
But on the upside, hooray for higher power 405! They really need stronger red and direct green now. Hurry up projector manufacturers!

Oh I have no interest in 3D movies other then 405 LDs & higher capacity recordable Blurays. Tho the price per blank disk even for std BD needs to fall a lot more for my liking.

A few things I don't understand about this:
One: Why does it take so much more power to read another layer, rather than just optical changes?
Two: Why is it so hard to fit a 3D movie into 50gb unless they're going beyond 1080p? A single HD film at 1080p is about 20gb, so 2 channels aren't going to need 5 times that? Or do they want to put more adverts in there for us lucky (genuine) consumers? Admittedly, Avatar + bonus features would be a tight fit for 50gb though
Three: For consumers and professionals who will be burning files (backups, photos etc), why do they need single 100gb discs when 2 50gb discs cost less and don't require a new burner or reader? Or is it just to buy into new tech/try out the 3D standard for filmmakers?

Keep in mind that there are also 8 digital audio channels in movies like avatar. I don't know how the left/right eye movies are recorded onto the disc, but it could be more complex than you would think. All the bonus features have to be in HD as well...

2-channel 320kbit MP3s take up 2mb/min, give or take. Quadruple that and add excess, and that's 10mb/min. For 300 minutes of content, that's 3gb of audio data. Left/Right eyes are just separate frames, so there's no reason it should take up more than double the space (except a small overhead). With minor compression you could fit 2 HD videos, full 7.1ch audio, and extras into 50gb. That's back-of-the-envelope calculations though, and does presume compression, so it's entirely possible my assumptions are incorrect.
I guess this new format does also allow for more expansion in the future, but it would quite possibly make more sense to just introduce new technology when data density is even higher, and the 3D screens are available and in common use - the majority of the people I know don't even use HD yet. This isn't consumer hardware by any stretch, though, so my argument isn't entirely valid.
To be honest, if it costs $60/disc, at this point you may as well just give someone a 3.5in hard disc with the movie on it

Honestly, when you have a lot of data to move or ship; say, deliver to a client -- cutting that 'real estate' in half actually is a serious advantage. I'm hoping BDXL does take off.

Couldn't agree more for both things.
-Red/green are starting to fall behind..200mW wont cut it...
-3D, like a headache, needs to die off....

I just thhoought Iw ould point out that Blu-Ray audio is recorded at high bitrate. (DTs Master audio is 1.5Mb/s. LPCM can be 4MB/s plus.) Thats not including the standard DTS & Dolby Digital tracks that are probably included. With LPCM thats 12MB's every 3 seconds or so......
Some movie also have a vido bitrate of 25MB/s and higher as well. Thats all adds up.
Believe me they will try and fill the disc the best they can. I know I would...

What's with all the 3d movies hate? If done properly (avatar, how to train your dragon and others) then it looks awesome. It only sucks when they add it in by computers after filming the movie in 2D just to make more money. See Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender.

3D haters are just haters. How can you not like the idea of a 3D movie, show, game, etc.? Right now, it's just clunky, what with either 2 polarized images using polarized lenses, 2 colorized images using colored lenses, or a paralax film with alternating pixel columns requiring specific viewing distances. Lasers are the way to go...... We need to figure out how.

Why is everyone in a 3d or no 3d conversation? The obvious choice would be FOR 3d because its gonna drive blu ray lasers forward and make them more powerful, for that reason alone, go 3d. Its not like 3d is gonna phase out 2d, that will never happen. Too many people are nausiated by 3d to make it phase out 2d.
