OK so after the delights of a PHR-803t build, which was deliberately oversimplified (i'm a noob lol), but turned out well and taught me a bit. I.E. heat produces artifacts on the diode.....
I am now going for a more complex BDR-S06J build (gonna keep it <500mw I think, but with a three element lens this should make up for it falling a few mw short).
First question: any suggestions?
next one: here is what I have ordered so far:
405nm Violet 500-600mW 12X BDR-S06J Laser Sleds/1 pcs 405nm High Power LD Inside | eBay (sled)
2pcs adjustable current laser diode driver 80-500mA w/TTL | eBay (driver)
I have a module and 3-ele lens otw as well. The driver seems to be the right one and will let me serial 2x 3.6v Li-ion (protected flat cells) for a total of 7.2v which should supply the driver "header?" voltage and diode voltage allowing me the full 800mAh reserve (anyone verify this?)
Thinking of putting it in a 2D maglite, and maybe turning my own heatsink (I inherited 2x lots of engineering stuff lol... inc. a steel lathe) out of copper.
Also, would this be better if I actively cooled it (bear in mind I live in UK... not overly warm :() using a 6v fan in parallel with the driver? so activating the beam turns on the fan.
Thinking also of giving it a USB jack maybe for that professional "can plug it in the PC to charge" look ;)
Peace.
ps 405nm interacting with gemstones looks awesome, I gotta post a video when i get it set up properly.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Just be careful as the S06J diodes are really sensitive. I had one die on me a couple months ago after getting everything assembled... It's a bad feeling to burn $50 in 5 seconds after hours of work.

My 2 cents would be to stay at or under 400mA, but check around and see what others are doing.

The 405s are really nice for their ability to make fluorescent objects glow.

Good luck with your project and welcome to the obsession;)

In what way would u define them as sensitive? heat or pressure (bumps etc)?

If I'm not mistaken I believe both heat and bumps but correct me if I'm wrong. So already onto your second laser, same here just waiting for my phr-805t. Making plans for my third well I wait.

I have never compared preasure / handling, but heat and ESD are at least factors in my comparison to a diode like the 445, which seem to be pretty robust. I had a 445 a couple weeks ago that the pins got ripped off and through about 45 minutes of soldering and unsoldering, the diode works like a champ.

I am by no means an expert, so please do some more research. Just seeing this was your 2nd build, I was just throwing out a warning as some who has killed a couple S06J diodes and I was being extremely careful with heat and ESD.

Cheers dude. I have been searching the forums endlessly it seems ^^ and there is alot of info but output (of driver) seems to be set between 400 and 500 mA, I wanted a portable class 4 laser lol so I may have to get a g-1 lens idk yet.

I have never used that driver. At 400mA you should still get 450mW with glass lens. A g1 or g2 lens will give you more power, but I think the dot is better with the glass lens.

if you want >500mW with a 3 element lens set the driver to just under 500mA. my 405 is getting 600mW with a flex set at 500mW and has hours and hours on it.

Dear Sir,
I think laser pointer forum is quite well established and highly respected. You have member, Senior members who are highly knowledged in the intricacy of any laser pointer. I have some knowledge and have requested for a circuit for a mini 1 watt driver, using SMD components (double sided PCB). Looks like these members don't like to share their knowledge. Sorry if I sound disappointed. I am disappointed

Crazydaze ,
You are right I am little lost pal. Thanks Laser Pointerer for the link. I am aware where I can purchase the driver. But the pleasure of building a laser driver is very intense as far as I am concerned. Why buy if it can be built. You gain more skill and knowldge. You must not remain stagnant you must go on to the next higher level. That is where senior members play their part.

Thanks
Tony1

Do you have any idea how much time, money, and work goes into making a driver? And you think you can just demand that someone share their designs with you? If you want to go to the next higher level why don't you design your own instead of demanding others give you their hard work on a silver platter.

There are open source drivers here, but if you can't even take a look in the drivers section and find them you aren't worth my time to post links.

Dear benmwv,

You sound selfish. I know one's product is the work of many hours and money. I can't demand, and I don't demand. It is one's wish. What link you are talking about, I have tried to find and being a junior member it is difficult to find what one wants. Why be a member in this forum if one cannot help another (a junior member). Isn't the forum a place for sharing and helping. Come on, be a helper not a criticizer. Helping members is something that goes around and might needed one day by the person who helped in the first place.
Any way I am sorry if I have caused any problem to any one.

Thank you benmwv

Trust me tony, I am not selfish with my designs. I also don't give every single one I make away because some I would like to sell.

I know off the top of my head there are at least 3 open source drivers here which could run a 1 watt laser laser. You could easily find them by looking in the driver section or using the search. Being a junior member is no excuse to be spoon fed.

Looks like these members don't like to share their knowledge. Sorry if I sound disappointed. I am disappointed

That is why I have a problem with you. You came into another persons thread, demanded designs, and ended with that statement like you think we owe you something.
