S06J with two 3.8mm diodes in it?

Hi,
I bought a "BDR-S06" sled from ebay (here) and it has two 3.8mm diodes in it (the red is a LOC). Dont the BDR-S06J's use a 5.6mm diode for the 405nm diode?

Are these retrofitted new diodes or is this a later model?

Or am I just wrong and they have always used 3.8mm diodes?

EDIT: OK I just put this BR diode in a module and powered it up. I ran it up to 550mA in an copper Aixis module with a 405 3 element lens (I stopped when is started to get warm). No LPM with me at work but WOW it sure is bright! (my eyes are sore from looking at the unfocussed spot- no glasses at work either).

Pretty much all new BDR-drives now contain 3.8mm Write LD's only. They are leaps and bounds more efficient than the 5.6mm version. Your Pioneer drive is a 2011 model
and is part of the BDXL family. ALL BDXL write diodes are by default 3.8mm.
This is a second phase of a UHD storage attempt by Sony and Sumitomo electronics div. They're trying to keep optical storage disks relevant to a rapidly increasing screen resolution. 12x 405nm = 50GB 2 layer disk. BDXL = +125GB per 4 layers. Possibly going to +250GB by 2014.

I'd would suggest you NOT exceed 500mA with a BDR-S06 diode for longevity. At 550mA the output is around ~800mW after a 3 element lens.
It's life is going to be cut VERY short or just die instantly. Either can happen. 450mA is more of a safe current setting.
Please don't make a habit of not wearing safety gear when operating a high power laser.

I haven't been keeping current lately, with much regret :(

What can we get from the newest 405s, through a G lens now? (Pushed above safe current)

The new 3.8mm versions of the 405 diodes I have tested seem to be on par with the current 5.6mm S06J's in efficiency and potential. How they will handle the same currents as it relates to life expectancy only time will tell. I should have some in stock by the end of the month.

I know I'm cheating by asking for the Cole's notes, but are we substantially further ahead than where we were back ~8 months ago when I stopped vigilantly following the board?

Basically, with good lenses:
638s hitting 1.2W mm, or 200mw sm
450s hitting 2.5W mm, or 300mw sm
405s hitting 1W
Green diodes still rare

Well laserbtb (SKY) managed to get green diodes in stock and pretty much everybody who wanted one with money bought one. Not sure what the WL is on these, thinking they're the same diodes as the one you have. What does yours meter on your spectro?

Ricktrent has been getting some freak 9mm's that are averaging 3W+ and is selling them at $200 + shipping.

I'm not so much up to date on the reds and violets myself, probably should be soon :p

Not as much has changed as you think.

1.2W out of the Mitsu diodes is still possible but without TEC they shift toward 650nm at that power.

Yes as pointed out in the previous post a way has been found to get more power out of the 9mm diodes. Dump a lot more in.:shhh: I still suggest 2.1A for best life but some are running them @ 2.55A. They will take it but for how long only time will tell. Just like some run the M140 @ 2.1A and see great power but I still don't suggest it.:)

405's hitting 1W are possible but again that is running them pretty aggressively and not all will survive. But I am very surprised how well the smaller package 3.8mm diodes are doing.

Low power green diodes are not really rare anymore but you will still have to give a kidney for them. High power greens are on the horizon though.:)

The only real change is we are pushing things further to the limit.

Okay, so more or less where we were. Thanks for the update.

I'll look forward to higher powered greens. Multimode I presume?

I believe my DG spectro'd at 515.

lazereer posted some vids on youtube showing a 3.8mm 405 diode that seems to give more output/input than the s06j diodes. 500mA giving 800mW+
@dtr - are these the same diode as you will have?

Yep those are the ones I am waiting on getting in stock. The S06J's that are coming out of the newer sleds also seem to be giving a bit more power as well. I have had several regular customers state they have been seeing increases out of them lately.:)
