I am using the standard AIxiz acrylic lens with the back cut out. The Aixiz chrome bezel is soldered to a brass pipe fitting with a plastic sleeve pushed on to it.......it makes focusing a doddle

im picky on my washers for the heat sink i made it needed a clean finish plus lots of washers are slightly smaller and slightly larger haha so i had to be picky.

... washers for a heatsink? i hope they were a very snug fit on the module

they are the actual size (12mm) thats the reason i buy so many.

lots of them are slightly bigger or slightly smaller smaller ones i can dremel out carefully til they fit tightly

I built my first blu-ray into a pocket-buddy like host. My goal was to be cheep about it, but not look like an ugly project box. I also wanted to avoid 9V batteries as they are expensive, rechargeable 7.5-8V don't provide much run time, and would be difficult to find / buy host. I also wanted to buy the Dr. Lava flexdrive - too expensive, but would have been awesome.

So this is what I settled with:
Two cheep LED flashlights totaling $5 each powered by 3 AAA batteries. - AdvancedAutoParts
LM317T regulated circuitry - I put a switch on a couple resisters to get two modes: 57ma and 97ma.
Axiz module - $7
803-t laser diode from Daedal - $27 - seemed like a good, reliably source


I ended up JBWelding the two flashlights together. After painting, I'm pleased with the looks and the results. Cant beat it for $39! The only issue I see is that it requires fresh Alkaline 1.5V AAA batteries to output 97ma. The LM chip takes over a volt to operate and the diode seems to be happy at 7.5 volts, so the output is affected if the input drops at or below 8 volts. Also it required me to make a metal spacer at the end for the batteries to contact the cap spring.

Ok, I give up! I would recommend against using the method I used above! I went and bought that awesome FlexDrive.
The advantages were most definitely worth it:
-Half the size
-Half the batteries (3XAAA)
-No wire down middle - I could press the module in no problem into the top, using the housing of the host as negative.
-Excellent battery life! - My last model wouldn't drain batteries, it would just drain them down a little and then it couldn't be used with the laser.

I am much happier with this laser now. Thank you Dr. Lava.
