Is it possible to make a blue laser beam with PS3?

Hi,

after seeing some laser assembiles on eBay for ~£40 for a PS3 laser(blu-ray) if I stuck it in a Aixiz housing or whatever, powered it up, would I get a super bright, blue laser with visible beam? Or would I get a blue dot? I take it that 10-20mw of blue laser light is not enough to burn is it?

Also, 'IF' I mangaged to get a blu-ray burner lens, what would the power of the beam be? Would it burnable? and would you see the beam? Does anyone have a tech sheet/ or guide?

Thanks,

Dan :)

Sorry to dissappoint, but blue, and blu-ray are apples and oranges. The only blue in blu-ray is the blue marketing people want you to think of when you hear the name. In truth, a blu-ray diode is ~405nm which puts it at the border between UV and violet. At 405nm, our eyes are not very perceptive so the dot would be faint, and the beam would be next to invisible without a lot of fog.

Normally blu-ray diodes from KES 400AAA units seem to be run in the 5-10mW range as much more can compromise the life of the diode. At that power you MAY be able to pop a balloon with some very careful focusing, but no, that really isn't enough power to burn anything.

I don't know why they call it blue ray, cause it's actually violet. The dot won't be very bright, but it will make lot's of things glow bright (like paper). And I'm not sure about putting one of those up to 20mW, you could fry it, but at 20mW you should be able to pop a balloon with a lens.

aww.... OK
I guess the idea sounded better than the reality. I'll stick with messing around with cheap DVD-Red, and then splash out on a propper green, the retail blue ones are WAYYYYY out of my price, the green
are pushing it! :)

BTW: Thanks for you advice/help

DB --

Look around here and CPF.  There are beam shots of home made blue ray pointers.  Learn how to build a red first -- the blue diodes are very touchy and it took some guys three tries to build one.  $ :( $ :(

I would like to see how it compares to Daedal's circuit - can you post the parts and schematics, or is this only a retail, "buy it pre-made" type of deal ?

nononononnono ! You are NEVER "unhelpful" ! I just picture you for some reason sitting there, looking at the screen saying to yourself, " How many times can I make SenKat post before he PM's me ? " LOL !!! ;D ;D ;D

The reason they call it blu-ray is becuase of the way it sounds. It sounds better than

@andy-con, did we ever hear about the driver for this? As an expectant father to twin blue babies I am keen to get the drive bit sorted :)
