Hello all!

Been away from DIY for some time. Btw, based on the specs of the BDR-205, it's supposed to write at 12x speed but read at 8x speed, so are we really talking about a 12x diode here?

If thats so then I'd really like to go for it since I haven't taken apart my BDR-203 which I can sell second-hand. I can probably get the BDR-205 at a local store near me.

@ bottles: Usually, the speed at which the users made references here is the one for burning (that is the operation that require power, anyway ..... you can easily read at 12X withmaybe 20 mW, but for write, you need much more)

Also, usually is referred to the speed for burn a single layer disk, but this may be a bit confusing ..... i mean, is not necessarily correct that if a burner is rated at 8x with single and double layer, the diode must be more powerful than one in a burner that is rated 8X single layer and 6X double layer, cause there are a lot of factors that are involved, not last the fact that the optic need to pass the beam THROUGH a layer for burn the second ..... is possible, as example, that the only reason for which the double layer is rated slower than the single one, is just cause they must use less power for not ruin the pass-through layer, focusing the beam on the inner one (we're talking about microns spots and decimals of millimeter thickness, after all ;))

Very informative explanation. thanks!
btw, with your reasoning your conclusion is that this particular model BDR-205 is using a 12x laser diode that is more powerful than the 8x in the BDR-203?

I thought this 12x diode would take a couple of years before it even came out with all that nichiya talk...

Well, if is rated for single layer write speed of 12X, there is a good possibility that the diode is more powerful than an 8X one.

Can not say an absolute reply, until that someone made tests, but, well, if it was from 8X to 10X, imho it can be both the possibility, a better diode, OR a better optics/driver assembly ..... but from 8X to 12X burners, there's a good possibility that the diode is better, and not just better optics and drivers.

Anyway, as i said, need to be done some tests on these diodes, before confirm it definitively.

Edit, just checked, in our distribution circuit, the 205 model is not present yet ..... is planned to introduce it in the first three months of 2010, at probably 170 Euro (like 250 $) ..... but probably, as usually happens, it may be more :p

whoa, wait! where did those photos come from? did you already get a 12x bdr-205 and made the photos yourself?!?

..and welcome to the forum! :)

i bought the pioneer BDR-205 at akihabara. the price is about 24000yen.
i operate the extracted ld at 150mA at 5V. i don't have the laser power meter,
so unfortunately i cannot mesure the laser power.
so, sorry, it is difficult to decide the maximum current level of this LD.

you can buy it for cheaper at around 21,000 yen at Tsukumo in akihabara.
I plan to purchase it there sometime soon.

Uhm, 24000 Yen, approximatively 186 Euro, or 270 $ .....
21000 yen, like, 160 Euro, or 236 $ .....

Just comparing ..... almost the same that they plan to sold it here, but unfortunately, in Italy is not planned to sell it before 2010 ..... huh, this probably means also that when we get it here, at this price, in the rest of the world it cost 20 to 30% less ..... i hate Italian IT distribution :p

That diode looks very easily extractable... I wish you could of taken some pics of the disassemble process. Photo's of sled and such.

If they come with a 9mm diode case, a Meredith module would work, and the heatsink fit for the Meredith...

But better yet, we'll just machine the fit on your V3 direct press heatsink Igor!

Does the Meredith have good thermal transfer out of the diode through the module?

As far as i can remember, the diode barelly gets stuck in there. It's held down by the spring, isn't it?

I mean, the 5.6mm adaptor, which resembles a 9mm can is held down by the spring, that's why the thermal dissipation worries me.

But yes, it is possible to make aluminum press-fit modules for 9mm diodes on CNC machines.... And it wouldn't be too expensive either, if they were standardised - like AixiZ (as opposed to designed for each host separatelly)...

Woohoo!

I NEED to test that 12x!!!!

Can anyone from Japan arrange a test "sample"? I'd like the whole sled please, but not the drive (customs issues - special shipping instructions apply!).

The price seems OK, and i REALLY NEED to test that, i'm already twitching all over just thinking about it! :yabbem:

This image looks very much like the back of the diodes coming out of the 8X drives.

Don't go crazy until we get a few tested.

Remember the "S03" (and the Alamo)

Peace,

..would love to see a hi-res pic of the 12x sled.. if Dave is right it might look familiar, huh?
ah, a pic of a 8x diode in its heatsink might do too!

seems like some members have access to them now. do i smell a groupbuy? :)
