Pioneer 16X BDR-209DBK

I picked up one of these drives to see if there are any upgrades to the 405nm diode in the 209 over its previous revisions. Unit was $72.

Got it and tore it down.

So I got the diodes out and looks to be a 3.8mm diode and a flat package red/IR combo diode.

After mounting it up time for a power test using a 405-G-2 lens.

So this diode is a clear improvement over the 14X found in the LG Drive I did late last year. These very much have promise and may be the same as the ones Angelo's has been getting.

Re: Pioneer 16X BDR-209BK

SWEET! I was HOPING these would show higher powers than the diodes we have now...1250mW@just about an amp doesn't seem to shabby for a single mode 405... I am still interested to see what the wavelength shift is on these.

Thanks for the test, DTR!

Excellent outcome - 1.25W of 405 is a nice development.

Even better, is the fact that it has a detectable kink, so you didn't have to kill it to find the peak output.

I assume a G lens was used in this test?

edit: yep...I didn't read

Excellent! It looks like 850mA is a good balance point for longer life span. I miss my 700mW 12x diode... I may have to get one of these eventually.

I loved seeing that LPM panel show over 1000mW! Nice job, now to find a supplier of diodes only!

Re: Pioneer 16X BDR-209BK

[EDIT]
Suggest 600mA as the max and 500mA for best life. Some of the early tests gave hopes running above 600mA was a good idea but seems to have caused quite a few deaths so the revised max is 600mA if you want to push it and 500mA if you want the best life.
[EDIT]
I am going to guess with this diode 25% back of the knee so 700mA is a good max suggested current to start with and see how they last there. Never know how they will like being turned on time and time again at higher currents. What you can push it to when slowly turning the current up and what it can take in a full shot start up are two different things. So if 700mA is a good current we do have a reliable 1W 405nm diode.

405nm is easily in my top 3 diode wavelengths.

Grabbing one of these drives ASAP, I love disassembling whole drives! :D

Re: Pioneer 16X BDR-209BK

Well I built it into a nice side clicky host I have had sitting around. Microboost running 750mA.:eg:

Re: Pioneer 16X BDR-209BK

I'm trying to decide between 750, and 800mA for mine.:eg: Were all those tests done with a G lens, or 3 element glass?

Placing an order for one of these through Newegg right as I type this, mounting it in one of those white powder coated pens from Skinner.

Side-note, DTR, got a 750-800mA boost driver lying around? Guess it doesn't have to be boost, I've got 2 batts in this host.

My goodness ... I'm so far removed from diodes and drivers, that I don't know who sells them still/anymore, or what drivers are out now/popular ...

EDIT: DTR, got any experience with AAAwave? Looks legit, and has 300+ reviews, with an overall 5 star rating on Google, just never heard of it. I can get it for $68 shipped.

The first post says that he used a G2 lens.

Great result Jordan! I'm eager to hear how 750ma goes.

Will you be offering these on your website anytime soon?

thanks for the testing jordan! would you know at what current they're driven at in the drive?

Re: Pioneer 16X BDR-209BK

In a drive, the laser diodes are pulsed, not CW. So even if we knew the drive current, it wouldn't be very
helpful.

1.25W of single mode, I still can't believe it! Thanks for testing the drive. I can't rep right now, but I
would if I could.
