PHR degradation

I was wondering if there is any visible sign of degradation in a PHR run at around 120 ma. What I mean is, by looking at the point of impact, would I see a change in the focused or unfocused spot? I noticed that if the laser is not focused, there is a bright thick line through the circle of light. Is this normal and would that also change as the PHR degrades?

Well, its a Coleman from Mohrenberg and I've had it for around a month. I used to be able to light matches at a full battery level, but it stopped being able to do that. I can still cut electrical tape and melt black plastic, so it obviously works, but since I can't think of any other reason for the loss, I thought it might be the diode. Maybe I should get it checked by a member with an LPM, as I have no idea of its actual power, but its at least 100 mw

It could be numerous other things. Matches are not all made equal, your lens could be dirty and causing you to lose power. It could be slightly out of focus... (My PHR set at 119mA will only start fires etc if I am within 1/2" or less of its set focus distance.) Maybe give those ideas a try?

Dirty lens might be the culprit, I keep this thing in my pocket so that could be it. Ive also never cleaned the lens. Thanks for the suggestion :yh:

And in case you're still curious, it's also quite common to have a "line through a circle" pattern with a laser diode, just because of how the diode is made.
