seems these really are gone for good :(

Nope. When I posted it, they were still reporting 20 units of the silver. They're all gone now, though.

Unless the importer comes through, it is back to the drawing board (and an immediate increase in the price of lasers) ;)

Peace,
dave

Here is what i think about these drives. The PHR head  has a few odd quirks that didn't seem right for a reader, the most obvious is the diode power (No mode hop till about 100mW!) , but if you look carefully the diode was made to be directly modulated by the power controller chip.

In addition, is a tilt compensator, and an external read verify photo diode that detects burn success are present. It's definitely a burner head.

Judging by the power of the diode it was for a 2x or early 4x HD-DVD burner.

This also explains the FW revision quirks on the X-box version.

Thanks for finding this....
Please list the source of your posting.

I saw some things in the drive that made me think that there were definate signs of "Burner" technology in there....

Lots of track sensing circuitry in this drive....more than a reader should require....

Nice score for Laserists!

Lots of cowboys.  Lots of room available.  Cheap shipping  :p

Peace,
dave

Err, I'm confused. What does montana have to do with cheap shipping?? I live in montana and spend a bit myself.
There is a loooot of room. I can shine my laser into the sky without really worrying about hitting an airplane.

... Daguin lol... It would be so cool to have like 500 drives. and its a surprise every time you open one. I was talking to a tint specialist about my car windows and we got talking about this security film that makes the glass not break apart. He said he put it on like 200 les schwab tire stores because people were driving their trucks through windows and stealing rims and tires. so i got thinking and i laid out a little schematic:

hey so while ive got some knowledgeable people here I had a question. Where can I get a "normal" lens with case. What I mean is not the crappy aixiz lens, and not an expensive merideth glass lens. Pretty much the merideth lenses, but cheaper or something, I like their little cases, but theyre too big or something i think. Also which one would i want for bluray and which for red. I know igort is making some bluray lenses so maybe il have a look at those. But mainly I dont know where to get metal lens with diode holders. I can make my own heatsinks with a lathe and block of aluminum so theres no worries about the size of the lens. :D Thanks!!!

Do you know of any of modules from DX that would fit the lamp?  It would be nice to order most of the items from them rather that from different places...

Thanks dave...

Alright!!  So, I just ordered two of them flashlights, two sets of them batteries, two of them modules... oh, and I have to two of them drivers from rkcstr (one on hand and one of the adjustable ones on its way... and to think I had remorse about buying two HDDVD from Geeks!! woohoo!

The only problem is that I now need to somehow explain to my wife the "out of budget" items in PayPal... I was planning on talking with her about it this coming Friday... thanks DWells55 for the checklist.

P.S.
(BTW, THANKS potatorage for the tip!)

It looks like you have two of everything. Isn't one of them for her? ;) I'm sure she would love one for your anniversary. ;D

Are you trying to get the guy injured? Dave, you know better than that. I got my wife a nice coffee travel mug with a big caffeine molecule printed on the side for her daily commute to the hospital and then ordered my 4 drives.
