Pesky BenBoost Drivers

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

I think I have a simple & effective solution for that voltage spike,

RVP demo - YouTube

It drops .3V so the .2V spike would not make the currant go up :)

What did I just see?

Where is that in the circuit? It looks rather large... Was there audio I didn't hear?

Thanks,

There's no circuit or volume, just a thing that outputs the correct polarity no matter what, it goes before the driver, it also drops 0.3V so I thought it would be good for this issue

So basically you just put it in the wiring from the battery to the driver... Is it four diodes diamonded together? Is this RHD's magic? ;)

Am I being dumb or are you being vague on purpose? :D

Lol yea it kind of is RHD's magic, although I'm not sure if he used this method, but they do the same thing :D

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

Rhd's circuit is far different. It has an extremely low voltage drop.

Your bridge rectifier has to drop more than .3v...

I don't see how it could help anyways, it would just make the input voltage a little lower.

If the input voltage is lower then the voltage spike would stay below 4.2V... And I have another one with actual PCB's that use mosfets, it would drop far less then this one also

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

Asides that, the voltage drop of the diode wouldn't make a difference anyway... the spike is going to happen regardless.

More capacitance is really the only effective solution, both on the inputs and the outputs if you wish to solve the spike issue.

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

So I've got a 500mA benboost and a 12x diode that I want to put in a build. What the general consensus about the benboost now? Toss it and get a flexdrive or something? Would hate to have it be a waste of 12$.

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

I definitely wouldn't hook that 12x to a benboost @ 500mA. Though, you could try for the sake of science and see if the diode blows. If it does then it's definitely a BB problem, if it doesn't then maybe I just got a wonky driver.

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

I'd throw those drivers in the thrash till more testing is done.

Funny, though, I haven't experienced any issues with mine. Very strange. My 12x diode (BDR-205?) has been fine ever since I put it together, so... hrm.

What current were you running yours? Possibly be low enough that the spike wouldn't cause the current to jump over LEDing threshold.

To small to make a good paperweight :(

Let us know if you do attempt to try it on the 12x though. If it really fails, I will edit the thread to "Pesky Benboost Drivers", it'll be a lot more appropriate and accurate title.

Re: Pesky 12x diodes

A few members have oscilloscopes. Why not send a few their way and check for spikes, and ripple.
