Hi, it's time for the latest installment in building.. a LG ggw-h20l 6x blu-ray burner was sacrificed for its beautiful gem 405nm laser diode. This time the kenbarrel kryton was anodized in sulfuric acid using the procedure I outlined in this thread. Then the barrel was cleaned and waxed with Meguiars car wax three times to give it a smooth feel and soft shiny luster. Because of the relatively uncontrolled home anodizing process, the finish ended up with a slight pearl-like swirl finish.

The laser diode was extracted as in the 6x thread and pressed into the kenbarrel head with a steel tube. A 1n4004 rectifier was mounted to the input of the flexdrive to drop the 6V of the 2 CR123 cells to 5.5V for the FlexDrive, and spring attached to this. The leads of the diode were stiff enough to act as a mount as long as the proper spring depth was set. The case pin of the diode was soldered to the cathode, and the pins were soldered to the FlexDrive, which was then glued in place to the barrel head, using drilled holes in the head as glue anchors. Finally, the spring was centered and the barrel assembled.

Using the provided chart, the current was adjusted to provide 85-95mW power output from the diode for long life. --EDIT: what the heck, it's not at 130mW :D-- A lens cap will be added for dust protection and pocket carry.

So far I'm really happy with this one, and all of the parts are available so anyone else can make one too!

EDIT: added pics:

The finish has evened out and become more silver over time. It's really smooth after waxing:

SCHWEET!

Thanks for showing the close up pictures of the driver set up too! What would you recommend using as a load to set the current on the driver for a 6 X build?

so jealous. that looks really good man. good job! I will definitely have to try my hand at some anodizing when I get my hands on one of kenom's barrels

hi dr lava how much was your flex drive boost circuit driver? how much the shipping cost ?im from the philippines. im only using western union to send the payment, i have no credit card, thanks.

Hi Jayorb, for the current test load, use a dead diode or a series of regular diodes that give the right voltage drop. Failing that, choose a resistor that gives the same voltage drop that your diode will at the desired current.

Adj, see the thread in my sig. I have no idea how western union works, but send a PM if you're still interested.

A dead diode! I knew I should have kept one of those 2 X diodes for something... Thanks for the tip. Because I read in your instructions that you cannot test the driver without a load...

P.S. It's hard to see, but the picture looks like the case pin, is soldered together with the positive pin, not the negative pin?? (maybe it's just the angle of the picture) But the correct connection, is like I have edited on your picture. Correct? - Thanks

Beautiful work there Doc! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] It's a little work of fabricated art. And 95mW to boot.

Sweet. :)

Cool thanks!

One more question please. (these drivers are new to me) For using the 2 X 3.0 volt batteries with a red build, I guess you use the same 1N4004 rectifier?
This one? http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=1N4004DITR-ND
Jay
yes, you'd have to use a rectifier, but it doesn't have to be 4004, 4001 is the same diode with a 50V peak reverse voltage instead of 400 (which doesn't matter in this case).  Any diode you find in the 4001-4007 series is fine, but lower numbers are more 'appropriate' because they are cheaper. I just happened to have a bunch of 4004's lying around.

Datasheet:

thanks Curious!

Re: 'Pearl' Violet 405nm burner Anodized Kryton bu

Thank you for the information drlava. Hope it's not distracting from the awesome blu-ray build. But one of the key features of the build is your driver!

So, the 1N4001 silicon diodes that we normally use for the DDL driver circuit would be fine correct?

And please....Would you recommend the same 2 X 3.0 battery supply for a red build with your drivers? Or, would a single 3.6 volt battery be ok? Because if an 18650 is to lg. in diameter, then a 17670 will fit these barrels.

And if a single 3.6 volt is ok, would we still need the rectifiers?

Thanks again!

No prob, I'm here to help!

>So, the 1N4001 silicon diodes that we normally use for the DDL driver circuit would be fine correct?

Yes

>And please....Would you recommend the same 2 X 3.0 battery supply for a red build with your drivers? Or, would a single 3.6 volt battery be ok? Because if an 18650 is to lg. in diameter, then a 17670 will fit these barrels.

Single 3.6 is fine, as well as a 17670, both could be used with either laser diode and without the 1n4001/4.

>And if a single 3.6 volt is ok, would we still need the rectifiers?

nope!

the 17670 is a great match for the kryton V1 and this driver without needing the diode also.

Great information for a GREAT build!
Thank you!
You said 'reverse voltage' for the 1N4001. It would still connect the same as your picture of the 1N4004 right? Oh...Right. (reverse voltage protection) Got it!

man am I jealous. I need to get off my butt and get some money together to order a couple barrels from you so I can have purty toys like that.
