Hi, I am new to this forum, this is my second post. I have been around lasers as a hobby for about 20 years. I have played with ruby, Nd, HeNe, Dye, DPSS etc. My latest build is a Blu Ray diode laser using a Star Trek Phaser 1 ( the small phaser). It came out OK, but I can see areas where it can be improved.

Components used:
PHR diode
FlexDrive
JayRob 405 G-1 lens
LiPo single cell
Left overs from the toy phaser

Anyway, made a video of it working kind of fun. Since I am new the system won't let me post links in the correct way so go to YouTube manually
youtube.com/watch?v=sD0DKn7l4xc

Also dug up a video from about 10 years ago of me firing a Q-Switched Ruby laser

youtube.com/watch?v=zH0-H1g72lc&feature=channel_page

About 2MW pulse, 15nS long, quarter inch dia beam, no optics (other than mirrors) q-switch actually works, that is the whining noise in the video, input power is about 200 joules. Death trap construction. I eventually mounted it into a container, then later sold the parts on EBAY so I could buy a Porsche.

Welcome to LPF...

Dude!

Your video is awsome! That build is excellent too! Star Trek! Here's the video to make it easier to view:

Please give me a link to where I can buy that 'flash paper'!!!

Got the paper at a local magic shop, I had to sign some forms that said I knew what I was doing with it.  The fools.

Jay, your lens works great, I got a 26% increase.   For this build it would have been better to leave the whole front of the glass holder in place (it would have looked cooler) since I could not fit the adjust ring into the package.

Re: New member, new build,  videos

Glad you like my 405-G-1 glass lens mod! :)

That is a good job on the build! Your video is HOT!!! Especially that slow motion 'flash' at the end!

But that flash paper caught my attention even more! I found some on-line and ordered some...

Did you do anything other than crumble it into a ball and focus your blu-ray onto it?

Chuck,

Welcome to LPF.

Wonderful video and fantastic build!

May I ask you a few questions? Is the Flex Drive adjustable or fixed? What are the "current adjust" and "current monitor?"

Re: New member, new build,  videos

Jay,

The flash paper is just rolled into a ball. I first tried it as a sheet and the laser would cut holes through it easily, and you'd get some smoke, but the total amount of heat was not enough to get a good reaction going. So rolling it into a ball puts more layers against each other, and bam.

I had the same problem with my q- switched ruby, it would blow holes through flash paper or vaporize gun powder, but not start a chain reaction.

TW

The current adjust is a hole in the case that allows you to adjust the pot on the Flexdrive. If you look at the bottom shot closely you can see the Flexdrive pot.

The current monitor is two pins that you can put a voltmeter on to measure the voltage across a 1 ohm resistor in series with the Flexdrive output. That allows you to monitor the current for adjustment.

If I open thing back up I might swap the charge connections and the current monitor positions.

Also regarding the numbered control on the top, I am using to select three modes 1. SAFE, where the laser can't be triggered. 2. ARMED, where the laser can be triggered. 3. RECHARGE, where the LiPo can be recharged without the laser being triggered.

This is a four or five position switch that came with the original Phaser. It might be cool to change it into a power level control, I might try that at some point.

Great build Chuck!!! I always wanted a real phaser. Looks like you did a pro job. And thanks for the tip on flashpaper, were always looking for something to burn. Flashpaper seems like a winner. I had to order some from http://www.magical-tricks.com/flashpaper.htm.
I cant wait

And welcome to LPF

Re: New member, new build,  videos

That's a pretty cool build, I like the current adjustment and the current monitor features. Did you use a phone battery or an RC battery?

Do you still have the ruby laser?
