Oh, ok then. Should have done my homework a bit better :-[ How can you tell the die size without a microscope, though? From what I can see with the naked eye, they look pretty much the same size.

"Short die" open can.

(I killed this one at 350mA)

And here is a picture of a 'long die' open can...

The power of each has been graphed by Dr. Lava:

Well, I am glad I didn't buy one of these. Seems like they vary from being about as good as a 4x to worse than a PHR... sad. I wonder if we will ever see any of the real 6x's again. Although I'm sure once we do, the 8x will be a lot cheaper...and that thing, based on Daguin's results, is incredibly amazing.

I have a picture of my SF-AW210... looks a lot like a phr. :'(
I think i will try to run it at 150mA. I hope it lasts :-/.

I saw two different "bar codes" in the three I tested. This one looks lightly different than either of them. However, they all look similar to the PHR's "bar code." I wonder if the maker was using up the end runs of some of the earlier diodes? That might explain the different "profiles" we've seen.

ALL of them have been different than the 8X and NONE of them have had the green that the 6X had.

Peace,
dave

Looks like you got those pins a bit hot there, rancor - I'd be careful whilst soldering. It may be the light but it appears the plastic at the base of the rigiht-hand pin has started to get a bit warm. How did you get such an amazing macro shot, though? I simply couldn't get a good enough shot to make out the mini-barcode, only the orientation square.

The red in the SF-AW210 sled is a short open can. Probably a 16X-18X. (300mA = 200mW)

The 4X and the 6X have a Long Closed Can red. They are good to 420mA (250mW). I have one pushed up to 500mA (305mW), but it really should be turned down to 480mA. 480mA is where the "knee" showed up.

Peace,
dave

Eh... 200mW is still decent. It's better that the red diode in the PHR sled... what'll that give, like 15mW? If both my violet diodes die, at least I'll still have enough red power to pop a sharpied ballon with...

According to Dr. Lava's graph on the short open can's, 300mA's will give you just about 175mW's with AixiZ glass...

Which means around 168mW's with AixiZ acrylic. But yes... plenty of power for burning!

I'm 100% sure that these are NOT phr diodes. When mine dies I will open it up and get comparison pictures of the die.

Then we can look at our $60 per sled this way...

Each $60 gets us a matched set of ~150-200mW red and violet diodes!

But thats still a pretty bad deal ;D, especially considering the inconsistency of the diodes.

Brightness has nothing to do with anything.
My 6x Pocket Mini and my PHR were the same brightness, though one was 190mW, and the other was 120mW.

They may not be PHRs, but they are weak.
They sure as hell aren't 6x's.
