New high power 405nm diode?

Kage and Jay informed me today, of a webpage selling a 120mW CW 405nm diode. The page is owned by an LPF member Sandstone.

If this is a real 100-120mW CW rated diode, it would be worth the price. Especially if the price was lowered for some sort of a GB. But the question is, is it real?

It shows a part of a datasheet from Nichia, that i've never seen before. If it's a real datasheet, then i would love to see the rest of it, just for the datasheet's sake. If the datasheet is real, and it actually belongs to that diode, that would simply be amazing! This diode should be as good as the 6x!


I wrote Sandstone two PMs today. I said i would buy the diode, test it and post the results, and that IF it's a real 100-120mW diode, MANY people would be VERY interested. But it better not be a PHR. Many scammers have been selling PHRs as 150mW CW diodes (or more). But the PHR is a 40-60mW diode.


The picture shows diodes in their pristine condition (Full length pins. But it could be any random picture). The datasheet also shows mechanical differences from other 405nm diodes we all know so well. So it would be immediatelly obvious, if it was a harvested PHR. I have my reasons not to fully trust this. But i would absolutelly LOVE to be wrong!


So i invite Sandstone, to proove that this is a real 100-120mW CW rated diode, belonging to that datashet. I will plot the diode on my analyzer equipment, do a lifetime test and post the data. If it's real, i'm sure she will barelly be able to keep up with the orders.

But it better not be a PHR! I will gladly pay for the test diode out of my own pocket, if she guarantees it is real.

If the diodes she is selling are in fact what that datasheet is describing, then BUY THEM!!!!! The datasheet is for a Nichia diode. Nichia Semiconductor invented 405nm diodes, and their diodes are used in Coherent's line of 405nm modules (the cream of the crop). I'm a little skeptical, however, since Nichia diodes typically sell for $1000 each and up...

If they are Nichia, the ~$75 Sandstone wants for one is a steal especially for 120mW.. Hell ~$75 for a true 120mW blu-ray is a steal.

How about it Susie? What's the story with these diodes? Igor is correct, if they are what the data sheet claims, then you will sell hundreds of them to LPF members...

No, Artix, this would be comparable to a 6x.


A 100mW CW rated diode could probably be set to 200mW and last for a decent amount of time.. But not forever. Especially if you consider, that when the power after a plastic lens is 200mW, the actual power output is >250mW.


But this would definitelly be the best 405nm diode so far (with the exception of the 6x, which should be similar).

ElectroFreak, calm down a bit. No one buy the diode just yet!
We've been screwed many times, also many people don't trust Susie, for different reasons.

That's why i am inviting her here, to proove that this is real, and not a harvested PHR diode. I would love to believe it is real!

Also, it's not a 120mW CW diode, it's a 100mW CW diode. 120mW is the "Absolute Maximum Ratings".


So how about it Susie? I have special dedicated equipment designed specifically for testing diodes. IF this diode is real, then i can proove it. If it's real, than my proposal is in your best interest.

I'm not even asking for a free sample (altho i wouldn't say no to it, and if it's real, even a free sample would be in your best interest).
But i will pay for it, if you give me your word, it's real. But if you give me your word, then it better not turn out to be a harvested PHR!

Yes, thank you Jay and Kage, for bringing this to my attention! You must have both done a lot of searching, even if it did turn out to be just around the corner... :)


But i would STRONGLY advise AGAINST buying this, until tested, and prooven to be what it says it is.

It would be simply amazing if true. What is even better, we would finally have a diode with a datasheet!



What is interesting about this diode is, that it shows a datasheet. And not just any old datasheet we know. This is a new one. So that's one indication, that there might be something to it..

I would love to see the rest of the datasheet, btw.. This can't be all there is.

I wrote her this morning (EU morning). She read my first PM, but not the other two yet.

What worries me, is that she hasn't replied to the PM she did read. :(
I would expect her to be interested in a potential sale.



Also, the specs are slightly weird, pulsed power is usually double the CW power. The 105mW Sharp diode has a 210mW pulsed rating. This says "100mW CW", but only "180mW pulsed".. But it could be real.. At least the datasheet.

EDIT: Oh, it does say 200mW pulsed, under certain conditions. Never mind that.

Maybe you guys should ask kipkay, he seems to know his stuff. I saw some new videos on youtube and now he has a site that sells high power diodes

Thos are completely different diodes.

I don't think KipKay even owns that website - I think he was just promoting it.

Ask someone who has performed his MagLite laser mod what they think of him (note: I have not) and you'll understand why we don't look for his advice.

So what is he, like the telemarketer of lasers? I have seen a few of his videos, thinking he new what he was talking about. Maybe it was the annoying nasely voice that made me shut out the crap and pay attention to the pretty colors :eek: I guess some reading is in order for me around here, and now would like to retract my previous statement :-[
