New to the forum blu ray diode question

Has anybody had any experience with the supposed "150mw" blue ray diodes from korea sold by zet.biz on ebay. I've been trying to get some info on the diodes i.e. manufacturer, part number and actual operating data but the seller just keeps telling me he ran it for 5 days with no cooling at under 100mw. That still doesn't tell me what the actual operating parameters are. If anybody has any info on these please let me know.

No doubt these are PHR-803T diodes.. You can get them here on the forum for $8-$15 each.

Where can you get just the phr-803t blu-ray diode?

Look in the B/S/T section of the forum and the advertisers at the bottom of the main page.

i ordered min from the ebay store zet.biz, it comes with the housing and a constant current driver for 37 bucks, hope i didn't get ripped off.........Do any of you know where i can get a cheap 100mw 650nm, i want to make a little lightshow with some stepper motors.

I'll leave it up to you to do the math.

Anyways, as for a 100mW red, I'd suggest you get a LPC-815 long open can, they're good up to about 300mW, but by driving it at a lower current it'll last much longer and you'll be able to keep it on for longer periods of time. The housing (called an aixiz module) can be had for $4 from plenty of sellers here.

Just got my blu ray from zet.biz, It arrived in antistatic packagine with driver already wired and diode mounted in a aixiz case. I tested it with the only battery i had hand 11.1volt lipo and it works perfectly, very bright when reflected from somthing that fluoresces, I'll bet with a glass lense i'll get slightly better performance from it. I'll take some videos of it tonight and post em. I forgot how much fun lasers are, i think my next purchase will be a 2 watt 635nm diode...wooohoo.

That voltage makes me uneasy. Pretty close to 12v. Do you have the drivers specs? even a linear driver like rkcstr only needs 8.4v to push a bluray correctly.

voltage doesnt matter as long as you dont go over the voltage(say the regulator vmax is 12v). even thought it only takes 7-8v to run a br and extra voltage will be converted to heat which can be bad for your diode but it wont kill it.

edit: that only applies to linear drivers... buck/boost drivers like the lava drive cant go over their max voltage(5.5v for lavadrive) or you can damage them

The LM317T and LM1117T regulators can handle 35 volts no problem. The thing to worry about is the other components on the board. On rkcstr's driver there's a mofset on the input that can't handle over 12v, or on my driver there's a capacitor that can't handle over 20v, so that's what sets the maximum.. I wouldn't be concerned about the regulator at all, I'd just read the values of the other components. (for what it's worth, I've given my own drivers close to 40v during destructive tests, and if the current is low enough it can actually work like that for a few minutes before it begins to melt things.)

I just hope the seller isn't overdriving that diode much.. otherwise the fun will be short lived. And yeah, the driver will easily accept extra voltage, it just turns any excess into heat.

Well I have just joined the Blue Ray laser club today, I just bought one of them blue Ray sleds from Ken (hightechdealz) and will imminently buy a lavadrive and some aixiz modules... so I guess I'll have hours of pure hobbyist fun in the next few weeks! I'm also new to the forum and i'm a patient and curious electronics hobbyist!

I'll be reading all the FAQs ans tips that abound on this site before doing anything, but I think I have a pretty good idea of what to do and where to begin. My first attempt will not be a pointer-style laser, i'll do it in a "labby" enclosure as you call it.

I don't have a power meter/calorimeter, but i'll rely on the recommendations of this forum to set the max. power in order to avoid the precious little bugger to go up in a puff of smoke.

If that goes well, i'll probably investigate the purchase of a high-power red diode eventually. For now, i'll just put aside the stuff until I have all the parts. I may have a few questions about proper heatsinking of the PHR-803 diode and aixiz module for continuous use, or high duty cycle...

While this may be routine for you guys, it's going to be an exciting first experiment in the world of laser hobbying.

I checked-out quite a few recommended vendors, but finally chose hightechdealz because of their free shipping to Canada. Some other vendors literally were tripling their total amount when shipping to Canada... not good. :( Hey... Canada ain't that far from the good ol' US of A... :)

I had this top notch DVD burner I just retreived from a PC at the office... I was briefly tempted to cannibalize it, but it was a very recent, nearly brand new unit in perfect working state, so I put it in an external USB/Firewire case instead. But the next drive that falls into my hands... beware! Bwahaha! :evil:
