Good information on the new BR diodes.

Although, I think the current 12X writers are 300-320mw diodes.

Well according to sony's current offerings , they are writing 8-12x BR with 150-200mw rated diodes.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is about 2 decimal-places off. Decimal errors happen.
 
I guess access to these will be as always; early adopters pay premium prices by harvesting their own from the drives that will use these when they appear, eventually. Then a while afterwards, the 2nd quality sleds will appear at usual laser parts etailers.

No chance of buying direct though, at that sample price.

A sample request would only be to proper manufacturers, and no doubt comes with a visit from a Sony sales rep to take orders for thousands.
 
I hope these will hit 1 watt or at least close. A single mode 405 diode capable of 1 watt would be awesome, even if it is expensive.

Im drooling over a ~1 watt without horrible divergence right now. :D

A quick search reaveals that the drives will cost $372.

And non-laser related, 128GB PER DISK!!!

Bah, let me know when they reach 1TB per disk. until then, no blu-ray burner will survive in my house......

You have to look at what lasers are designed to do. The 445nm and 405nm diodes are capable of most of the same things. If anything, 405nm is capable of more power than 445nm, all else being equal. The different we see is in design. You can have higher power or you can have lower divergence, but you have to trade off one for the other.

405nm diodes are more than capable of reaching powers higher than 1W, but not without sacrificing the divergence. 445nm diodes are capable of lower divergence, but not with 1W power outputs. 405nm lasers we see are meant for optical storage, which means it HAS to have lower divergence, which means the power is limited to whatever you can get in single-mode operation. The 445nm diodes we see are used only as an illumination source, which means a good beam isn't necessary, which means you can use a wider laser and get more power, but you won't have a good beam.

So 1W 405nm lasers are perfectly possible. Heck, I've seen a single violet laser diode with >2W of power output, but you'll never see it in an optical storage drive because it wasn't single mode.
 
I called the Sony U.S. Sales number and selected the "Blu-Ray" department (for lack of a better option :p). I ended up having a very nice time explaining and discussing this diode with the sales rep, and he seemed quite fascinated by the idea of making custom lasers out of such diodes, as we hobbyists do. I didn't quite get anywhere in terms of actually purchasing one of them, but it was worth a try and ended up in an interesting conversation.

Anybody else have any luck with this? I'm thinking the next step is calling Sony Japan. Oh and btw $11.92 should be accurate because that's how much 1000¥ amounts to. Do note that they would probably only accept orders at these prices in massive quantities, however.

Wondering why searching on sony.net site give me "no products", with this part number ..... are they searching to keep it hidden, after make a news announcement ? :confused:
 
If a company is willing to buy 1000 units and sells it for $15 each, I am still interested. It is far cheaper than a complete 12x BR sled and less hassle to harvest it.

Funny how in your reasoning, you failed to mention the higher power output as one of the reasons for your interest in this diode :whistle:

Any speculation on the beam properties of this diode? I heard assumptions that the higher output would bring the beam closer to that of the 445nm's, but since it's being used for optical storage, the beam and operation should be much better than that of the 445nm's.
