Need help with design for GF's laser...

Okay,

So I told my girlfriend I would build her a 405nm laser. So I have had trouble with drivers and I thought "Hey! I could just stick an LM317 in there with a resistor like in this picture:

The diode is a PHR-805T, for which the pinout specifies that it is case negative. So all I should need is a wire running from the positive input of the PCB, to the V-in pin of the LM317, out of the V-out of the LM317, to the positive pin of the diode. The negative will automatically go from the host through the case pin, where it will complete the circuit.

My question: would this work? Have I missed something?

It sure will.

With a case negative diode you don't have to run a negative to the diode at all.

Use bout a 10~15 ohm resistor too :D

When I gave my GF a laser I just made sure the host was very shiney :yh: That's pretty cool how simple that design is I never thought about it that way.

Ya I have had a lot of difficulties finding a driver that does exactly what I need and while I was thinking about alternatives I just thought "maybe I am over thinking it..."

nice drawings! :) and what are you putting this into? cause idk how one would fit this in a flashlight. will it be in a project box?!

It will be in a flashlight. I completely drilled out the pill so there should be plenty of space. The resistor will be soldered as close as possible between the pins and a single wire will go to the positive of the diode. I think there should be space enough. I'll try it today and upload pics if it works

and i believe you can file down the top of the regulator if it doesnt fit.

^^Lol don't tell me you've never taken apart a video game controller or anything like that? Yes that is a rumbler :D motor with a lopsided weight. Rumble rumble, the ladies love it. But there's no need for that right WB? ;)

It's a pager/cellphone vibrator, so when you stick your phone on silent the motor spins and since the weight on top is not balanced it vibrates. I hope I don't have to explain the connection between vibration and it being for your girlfriend now :D

No need for that haha, thats why I deliver the laser to her in person :whistle:

But no, I have never taken a game controller apart haha. I tend to use them more than destroy them :p

EDIT-as in vibrator i meant something that vibrates... like a rumble pack lol :D
