I'm speechless.

stumbled upon this after a keyword "exotic" search.
all in all, very impressive.
Those six jaw chucks are some serious business.
That host reminds me of Luke's custom lightsabre.
but i gotta give you +1 rep for that braided ribbon cable lanyard fob.
Now that's real patience and concentration.

edit: after a closer look, i'm kinda envious of that roll of Kapton tape, too.
the other engineers keep stealing mine.

That is the sickest chuck I've ever seen on a mini-lathe.
Where did you get it? Do they make them for 9"x20" Jet lathes?

Also, very nice host. Very well planned out and comes together seamlessly.
What's more impressive is that it looks like you did it w/out hte use of any DRO's on the machines.
I love old school turning & milling.

Cant even Imagine your work getting better it looks stunning now... If you go into making host you will make a killing on this forum

Unfortunately I did not make the paracord FOB. No idea how too. Just ordered it according to how I wanted it. Wish I knew but I only mod lights.

My 5" I was lucky to get cheap on ebay but I had to purchase new jaws for it & made my own adapter to fit the mini. I have since sold the 5" as I don't plan on keeping the 8x14 anymore. On my bigger lathe I purchased the 6" brand new, runs almost $1K with the backplate. You could fit one on a 9x20 but you probably need to make a backplate for it. Bison only make backplates with camlocks, threaded, & American nose. I think the 9x20 is either bolt on like my 8x14 or threaded.

Yup no DROs on my machines. Although one is on my list to get it's not a high priority since I don't mind turning using just the dials.

Don't think I ever plan on making production runs. Everything is manual so I plan to just keep it strictly to customs.

Damn.... Well I missed that part. He should make everyone their own custom host for like 300$ each.... Maybe not that much.

That is incredibly low, I would guess that he has days of lathe work in on that host.

If you came to me with custom prints for only one laser host I would probably quote you something like $700-900. Any less and it wouldn't be worth my time, and thats on a CNC lathe! Machine time is usually around 80-90/hr. I can "get" the machine time a lot less than that, but it still takes hours to days to make a new host.

Ohhh. Well I would never pay 900 for a host =P

Exactly, many people do not realize how much time is spent in machining even something that "looks" this simple without intricate designs. I too was one of these people before I got into machining.

Then there's the cost of the machine, tooling, overhead, & many other factors added into the cost if a shop were to have done this. Labor time was one of the biggest factors but it also took me $6K worth of tools to be able to make this. :crackup:

I can attest to making hosts being a slower process than most people realize. I'm about 20 hours in on a relatively simple 'pill'. But granted. I started with rod stock that was a good half inch larger than necessary.. because it was what I had handy without buying anything, and my half worn out 60 year old lathe isn't exactly the quickest thing to use and keep any kind of real tolerances.
