Hi,

I'm from france and i am a newbie... but i love laser pointer ;)
and i build my first blue ray pointer.

I use this HOST

from DX http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2602

this modul (metal and glass)
02.jpg

this Driver and PHR 803T  ;D

And this battery

from DX http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3273

some video

when i set the pot of the driver i Use a 36 Ohm resistor and set to 100mA the laser work fine   :)

so when I measured the battery voltage was 4.2V, but the laser always operated

i use it,
i use it,
i use it and stop to work :-/

i don't understand why!!!!  :'(

ther is someone who help me to understand why before buying another diode...

You might have killed your diode. Does it shine very weak, or is it completely dead (no light). Dead diodes often has a very weak light still coming out of them.

It could also be a electrical problem inside the laser. Take it apart, and look at all the contacts/solder joints. Are they nice and clean? anything looks bad?

Other than this, I don't know what it could be... It's most likely a dead diode I'm afraid, though... :-/

Ne pas casse notre regules.

I have a feeling your driver might have been sending out more than 100 mA.  A 36 ohm resistor is not the proper way to check the current flow, since that would correspond with only a 3.6 V output, not the 5.5 V output your diode will use. Use some 1N4001 diodes and a 1 ohm resistor to measure the current.

the first time it "dead" it stop to work
After 1 Hours i test it and it shine very weak
and dead again...

but when i set the pot i do it with a 42Ohm resistor because the battery is 4.2v, no?

Lisez avant que vous ecrisez tout en plus.

That driver is a BOOST driver.  It takes the input voltage (3 to 6 volts) and increases it to about 6 V.

The proper way to test it is to use a set of diodes which approximates the LD - which is about 6 1N4001 diodes, and then use a very small resistor to measure the current.  You won't get the proper effect with how you have done it

check the battery, too. Those drivers will work down to a very low voltage, but when they cant sustain anymore they dont 'fade' out, they just stop working. So it may just be that your battery needs charging.

Yup, this battery just shut down 0v when the voltage is down to 3.0v.

If the battery is OK then check the driver output, I have a couple of this driver with 0 output voltage.

Re: My first blue ray pointer was great... from FR

now when i turn the pointer to "on", the diode make Heat and a have 3.6v at his pin...

OK is dead...

(i buy another one or more...)

so
the good way to set the pot is ->

or not...

That looks right. Go with six diodes - one diode would only give you a voltage drop of 0.8 V.

Just remember to short the leads together after disconnecting the test load to discharge the capacitors.

Did this module come in the laser or did you buy it?
Thank you and sorry about your blue.

Re: My first blue ray pointer was great... from FR

The PHR 803T diodes have always worked fine for me at less then 100mA, around 70-80mW with no problems. But I've blown 6 diodes trying to achieve 100+mA or 100+mW. Some last longer then others, but the bottom line is that they're simply over powered at that current and WILL DIE. And to continue this pattern will declare me legally insane, to expect different results. Luckily, the price of the PHR's are still dirt cheap, or for higher power you might want to hop on the 6X group buys. I'd say don't over estimate the current these PHRs fool you into thinking it can take because they do work well beyond the manufacturer’s purpose unlike other diodes that blow instantly when driven at higher current but that doesn't mean it will last. I've had some 100mW blu-rays that lasted minutes, and 140mW blu-rays that lasted several hours using the PHRs, but, they are both dead. Replace the diode, lower the current, and deal with a less powerful laser (unless you go with the 6x) that will last.

Not ;) I have modified the picture for you, meter goes across the 10hm resistor and is set to millivolts, which is = milliamps.
