OK so after ordering a load of 650nm diodes from ebay (china...), i decided to bite the bullet and just go for a setup from the UK based sellers:
- a 100mW 405nm thingy (PHR-803T Sled Containing 100mW Blu-ray (405nm) Laser Diode - UK Stock Item | eBay), technical term sled ;), interestingly has 2 diodes a red and a blue.
- a driver (two actually)

- a host

- and a lens (@405nm)

All of this is otw with a 14500 li-ion cell/charger. next post shows me putting it together when it gets here, so all is left to say is this "anyone got any advice for the noob?"
peace
ps. I am looking to use this to burn stuff, for fun! (can it be done?)

be careful when extracting the diode. Also just so you know 405nm is actually violet/purple. Should be a fun first build. Take your time, and good luck:beer:

saftey googles are a must so add that to your order.

Yeah i get that, i like my eyes lol!! Just need to sort out a test load somehow as well.

Edit:
Looking at this thread http://laserpointerforums.com/f50/phr-803t-red-ir-diode-pinout-currents-36212.html it seems possible to take the red/IR module from the sled, connect them in series (via a resistor, Driver--> IR --> resistor --> red) and just run more volts to compensate for it. Adjusting focus for the IR would produce a ballon popper (so it has been stated) that has its power in the IR but still holds a visible beam (still a nice shiny 50mw pointer). I know u people throw em away, and seriously if u have any that u dont want i will friggin pay the postage just to have some unusual diodes to play with ;) o and uni students have a hard life and i have no monies :(.

Just like to say ty quick to all of the posts i have read that helped me, from lpf anf u tube, laser is finished in a nice baccy tin build. piccies to follow!!! o i can light doobies on this as well lmao, fun times.

You really should be careful with that IR idea, IR can be very harmful to your eyes and increase the risk of damage as well as needing more specific safety glasses. Have you gotten a pair of glasses for your blue?

Photos are in, not the most amazing looking build... but it is kinda sexy lol (if u like OLD!) I was going for something I could add to so everything is in the open to ben tinkered with. ;).
No beamshots atm, but some to come I am sure!
I have blu goggles, no red atm but I am shelving any IR ideas for the time being due to invisible (although the theory will still be discussed/reviewed) retina removal issues.
A bit more about me:
I attend university (microbiology) second year mature student, have a reasonable background in chemistry but my physics needs a lil work (lots tbh lol). any way... here is some piccies!

No bad for a first build. You should check out my just recently finished first build of a red burning laser.

I did actually read yours before I got my stuff delivered, too many posts to count or give praise individually to tho lol. I never bothered with a build guide there are enough of them from those more experienced.

Edit:
Driver board is set to ~105mA, idk what sort of mW it kicks out but it can char wood from 2 foot if focused.

New diode otw. 100 ma is dull lol, just ordered a sf-aw210 to go with this lol.
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=1207918 i think its the right one... lol.
Ok, 1st diode went pop, good times... laser housing being remodelled to accomodate 2x 3.6v li-ion protected cells in series to give enough voltage to drive a 405nm 300mW (set at about 200mW I reckon) setup with a non-boost driver. Have a look!
