Lets hope this sucker can hit high powers. It would be awesome if it had a fairly big wavelength shift as well- I am not sure how much the current 405's shift, but being able to easily get ~415nm would be sweet.

Good call - it would be worth running a spectrometer test while I murder it.
My spectro isn't calibrated for 405s, but I'm not against recalibrating it.
Does anyone know of at least one anchor wavelength around the 400 range that I'd be able to source without much hassle or cost? It needs to be an absolutely stable, constant wavelength of light.

Mercury vapor lamps have a very strong peak at 436nm and a weaker peak at 404nm:

I don't think I've seen mercury vapor bulbs anywhere local, and they're still somewhat pricey to order online.

Every fluorescent lamp you've ever seen has that 435nm line, hehe. All standard fluoros are mercury vapor (low pressure) + a red phosphor (and some additional phosphors). Typically you won't get the 404nm line from fluoros though.

- 435 (fluorescent)
- 473 (DPSS)
- 532 (DPSS)
- 589 (DPSS)
That would give me a fairly good calibration, and although it wouldn't actually bracket underneath the 405s, I think it would be a sufficient calibration for our purposes.
I really have to think about this though, because I'll be losing some of the 600+ nm range, and it will take a physical re-calibration. I'm not sure how much there is to be gained by spectro-ing the 405, as I reflect on it.

Does you spectro only have a 200nm range of calibration? I would think if you had calibration standards for 300-900nm (or whatever the sensor range is) that you could maintain calibration throughout, but it sounds like you have a limited window to work within.

The science surplus spectrometers can be calibrated for a large or small range depending on the lines/mm in the diffraction grating used. Disadvantage of using one that covers a larger range is the loss in resolution.
