Default Making laser from ps3?

Yoo,
I have a ps3 with YLOD "yellow light of death" and was wondering If incould make a laser pointer with the ps3 blue ray diode, the ps3 can be fixed but I live in Australia so was wondering if there is a point to fix it, in Australia the milliwatt limit is 1mW so should i use a 1mw green laser pointer, take the diode out of that and put in the ps3 diode?? And if soo will it burn?? I really want to get a burning laser pointer, in AUSTRALIA and will a 1mW green laser be able to burn?? Pot modded maby??

No, it's totally not worth it, for 8~10$ you can get a diode that is 3x-4x stronger
than the one in the PS3.
Look for "PHR-803".
You can always import laser bits and pieces into Australia, just not complete working laser pointers.

Also, 1mW won't burn anything.
You will need at least 50mW to pop a dark ballon.

Haha thanks dude, alot of people have said to import little bits and I WAS thinking of doing that but is it possible to import a good diode and put it in the 1mw laser pointer casing and laser housing ?? Thatz what I kinda want to do

if power isnt your main concern, you can get a multicolor laser with the PS3 diode. there is a red UV and IR laser in that single diode. it just takes a bit of know how and the diode's pin out could be pretty cool.

It's not really worth it. The three wavelengths are all at different focal points, so you would have to refocus it for each color. A dichro based multi-wavelength laser would probably be a better option. However, that brings me to the point that the PS3 sleds are quite useful for the dual beamsplitter cubes in there, I'm using one to make an RGV laser, as seen here: White laser pointer - It can be done

No diode is "Not worth it" especially for a amateur laser builder. having to refocus the laser after switching wavelengths is a minute burden considering that it is multi color. there arent many multi color diodes out there to begin with anywase. at any rate the focal lengths arent too far off. the amount needed to turn lens inst much. dont forget that all three of those wave lengths were all focused by the same optics in the sled to read the discs. Id say get a cheap host perhaps a pen host or something and play around with it. you can get a super cheap driver for less than 5$ or you can build one your self.

CrossOut What is "red UV" (you mean a Red & a UV I guess) and You won't be able to see the IR at all. Let Me see that means You will have a 2 color Laser "IF it's hooked up correctly" outputting at the most 5mW of 660nm and 405mW which is about as exciting as a Frog Fart. Danoroth repairing the PS3 and buying a PHR is the better way to go, but it's totally up to You.

lol im not saying to have them all in a single coherent beam. you can switch between the three.... repairing your PS3 is probably the best idea but seeing that you already removed that diode you might as well put it to use.

660nm + 405nm - a less purple reddish color (magenta?) sure

and the ir you can use with your camera. or redirecting laser guided missile attacks *sarcasm* hes brand new to making lasers guys.. let him get some practice in.. if he destroys the diode it wont be at a loss.

another side note, cats can see IR light so technically you can make a cat flip out chasing a laser dot without the visible laser dot effectively making the cat look just plain crazy.

PHR will be your best bet for a cheap 405nm laser pointer but you cant pass up the chance to play around with a multi color diode.

I didn't see where He said the diode was already removed. It's also in the realm of possibility that YLOD is because the 405 burnt out. He can order a new SLED from PSBOY for less than $30.00, and if that is the problem playing with the bad one certainly could be interesting practice.

the kes sled from the ps3 is not common around here. it has a super low powered violet diode for an expensive price. now if you are sure you want to disassemble your ps3 for a low powered violet, then by all means do it. you will get valuable experience in the diy aspect.
but for 10 bucks you can buy a PHR sled with a higher powered violet and good optics.
