Just got mine today is this a case positive setup?

All mine have been negative towards the apeture/spring positive towards the "clip".

I got 2 from etimeshop and 1 from another seller. The etimeshop pens flank the other sell above and below on output/brightness. One of the etimeshop pens is really bright though.

Anyone have a green delivered from etimeshop yet? I went ahead and ordered one a few days ago. As someone else mentioned... I too wonder if they are overspec too.

The only thing bugging me is the shape of the dot. It isnt perfectly round and when viwed from a distance seems to have a secondary dot that is wider and off axis from the main beam. Its hard to explain and I cant capture it on camera. If you look at the dot from an angle from the right side there is someting like a halo to the left of the dot (like a "drop shadow" in graphic design speak) bit if you shift your viewing ange to the left of the dot the halo will move to the right. Is this normal?

Here is what the dot looks like, 1 foot away on a black document binder.

121779654.jpg

That picture is exactly what the dot should look like: like an ellipse that is partially cut off to form a circle, but some of the elliptical intensity difference is still visible.

Am I reading correctly that when close up it's one dot, but when viewed from farther away it's 2 dots? And it's blurry from far away? If I'm reading correctly, then that is 100% in your eyes. Human eyes have a lot of trouble focusing on the dot, so the farther you are from the dot, the more blurry it looks. This can also result in the halos you see.

A test you can do for yourself to prove it's your eyes and not the laser: get a friend, and have him point the laser at something from far away, so that when you're standing next to him, the dot your see is blurry/messed up/whatever. Then walk up close to the dot on the wall, leaving him standing far away with the laser. As you come back close to the laser, you'll see the dot it fine and looks exactly the same, even though the laser is farther away. It's really just that your eyes have trouble seeing the dot from far away, even if the laser is fine.

not really. i have 5 of them and they are all identical to the eye; almost as bright compared to my Brother's DX greenie which is at 10-15mW

Ok,

There are two different styles internally on these.

One is a brass housing with a aixiz style plastic lens in the middle which you can swap out for anything you want once you remove the loctite.

The other is a solid brass top as in the pic which looks cheaper made.

If you swap lenses - be careful. Fooling around, I tightened one of the lenses down to get focus and ended up pushing the front of the diode back in two of them. One of them survived, the other gave his life for the cause.

Both styles came on my last shipment of these from the same ebay seller that has been suppling them. Power wise they are about the same.

It also appears that the entire head assembly is held in place by the threaded ring in the top. I cut it apart (the one I destroyed above) and once the threaded ring came out the entire assembly was able to slide out.

The driver looks similar to some others I've seen (I don't know drivers very well) meaning that- it has a driver and there is a pot and it is also covered in loctite.

Well I guess this gives me an excuse to buy few more.

I just got another BR laser (PHR) and the dot looks the same so I guess the ebay laser is good. Yup Its my eyes, when wearing goggles I don't see the second dot. :)

Mine came pretty quick as well, the other night it was foggy outside and i went to go play around. needless to say it looked pretty amazing with a very visible beam. is there anyway to use a different power source on these pens? it seems to eat AAA batteries

I got mine today. Think I mihgt have gotten what I paid for (~5mw). I can't see the beam in a dark room and I cant light a match. When trying to light a match I noticed a shadow of the head on the table, the beam looked to be bigger then the match head. Maybe mines out of focus, idk. When shined on a ruler the beam is about 4x5mm.The light on my ~5mw Green laser is alot smaller and brighter. I know that I can see green alot better then Violet but shouldn't the point at least be the same size or even smaller?

Eh, some creative wiring and a D-cell battery pack would be possible and not too difficult, but I prefer just finding cheap AAAs. They pop up in a few places online occasionally. Most recently, I bought 100 Rayovac AAA batteries that had labeling mistakes on them for less than $10. I'm not even half way through that bag, and I don't feel bad at all recycling (not throwing away!) an old set and popping a new set in a laser.

Do you have to cut the housing to remove internals. Sense mine is out of focus I was maybe considering it a good opportunity to put it into a new host. I have removed the internals on another laser pointer but its now Led'd.
What would be a good host to start out w/ my first build?
[edit]
I took the Dremel to my pointer and got the guts out still in working order, sure wish I knew a better way of doing it, I tried pressing it out but could only get it so far till I ran out of room to press anymore. So I just cut it out. Looks like mine is the aixiz style plastic lens. sure wish I had a camara so I could share what mine looks like outside of the host.
Now I got some research to do before I can go any further.
